
Voter turnout nears 80 percent
Voter turnout hit historic levels for Tuesday's general election, with some local precincts
reporting over 80 percent turnout and all being above 70.
For Ball and Chatham Townships, the highest turnout was in Chatham 6 (83.37 percent), with
the lowest being Chatham 3 (71.24). Chatham 1 was at 80.07 percent, with Chatham 2 at 79.11,
Chatham 4 at 78.77 and Chatham 5 at 75.69.
Ball 1 was at 75.96 percent, with Ball 2 at 80.68. In Ball 3, the figure was 81.26, with Ball 4 at
79.92 and Ball 5 at 81.49.
In Sangamon County overall, voter turnout was at 72.6 percent. Long lines were reported at a
number of polling places, especially early in the morning with a steady flow reported all day long.
Ball and Chatham Township voters, with the exception of the positions of U.S. President and
Sangamon County Recorder of Deeds, backed Tuesday's general election winners.
Republican John McCain carried both townships, earning 1,949 votes in Ball and 1,920 in
Chatham. Barack Obama had 1,557 in Ball and 1,578 in Chatham.
Local voters went along with Con-Con and the County Board proposal, resoundingly defeating
Con-Con 4,958-1,858 while saying no to reducing the county board size, 3,576-3,020.
Sen. Dick Durbin earned a total of 3,942 votes in the two townships, his opponent Steve
Sauerberg at 2,854. Rep. John Shimkus defeated Daniel Davis by a combined count of
4,818-1,785.
State Senator Larry Bomke was an easy winner over John Devine, 5,436-1,785. Rich Brauer,
running unopposed, received 7,138 votes.
In the county races, incumbent Tony Libri defeated Cecilia Tumulty 4,449-2,386 for Circuit Court
Clerk; Susan Boone won re-election as Coroner, defeating Aby Phoenix 4,485-2,140; John
Schmidt was re-elected State's Attorney, defeating Ron Stradt 4,542-2,597; while Josh Langfelder,
who won the office of Recorder of Deeds, lost to Don Gray in Ball and Chatham by a combined
3,865-2,977.
In one county board seat that included Chatham, incumbent Craig Hall of Loami defeated Ray
Pierceall 423-208.
The voting by precincts in the presidential race is as follows: Chatham 1 (229-228 for McCain),
Chatham 2 (298-261 for McCain), Chatham 3 (337-217 for McCain), Chatham 4 (334-303 for
McCain), Chatham 5 (252-199 for McCain) and Chatham 6 (470-340 for McCain).
Ball 1 (145-125 for McCain), Ball 2 (484-333 for McCain), Ball 3 (392-276 for McCain), Ball 4
(465-461 for McCain) and Ball 5 (463-362 for McCain).
