Schatteman, Mau, Herr prevail in tight village
trustee race
Two-term Chatham Village Trustee Mike McGrath was ousted in an exceptionally tight race for three
seats on the Chatham Village Board in Tuesday's election.
Newcomer Matthew Mau, 25, has charged his way onto the Village Board. Incumbents Joe
Schatteman, 40, and Chuck Herr, 66, were re-elected by the voters.
With voter turnout low, every vote counted, and then some. Schatteman, elected to his second four-
year term, led the way with 1,094 votes (26.6 percent), while Mau was next at 1,013 (24.6). Herr,
elected to his third term, had 1,009 votes (24.5), while McGrath had 998 (24.3). Less than 100 votes
separated the four contestants.
Mayor Tom Gray, running unopposed, was elected to his third term in office, and Clerk Pat Schad,
also running unopposed, was re-elected as well.
Herr, Schatteman and Mau join current board members Tom Kavanagh, Jill Reynolds, and Jeanne
Boyle on the Chatham Village Board.
Voter turnout in Sangamon County was dismal, at 18.1 percent, though it was somewhat higher
locally. Vote breakdown and turnout for Ball and Chatham precincts are as follows:
•Ball 2 (17.8 percent) - Herr 11, Mau 10, Schatteman 8, McGrath 7.
•Ball 3 (29%) - Schatteman 133, McGrath 126, Herr 123, Mau 116.
