Rayhill just misses state berth, swimmers
conclude banner season
Glenwood High School junior Lindsey Rayhill just missed qualifying for the state meet in the 100
butterfly at last weekend's IHSA Girls Swimming Sectional held in Springfield at Eisenhower Pool.
Still, the Glenwood program took a significant step forward, finishing second overall out of nine
teams. SHG took first with 200 points, followed by Glenwood (133), O'Fallon (127), Quincy Senior
(124), Springfield High (84), Jacksonville Routt (40), Jacksonville (37), Marion (22) and Granite City
(9).
Rayhill's time was 1:00.79 in the 100 butterfly, less than eight tenths of a second behind the
qualifying standard of 1:00.01. She finished fourth in the event, as swimmers from Anna-Jonesboro,
Belleville East and Alton advanced to state.
"I am very excited about how well our girls performed this year," Glenwood head coach Kara
Bryant stated. "We have improved so much from last year in the team standings and it is really nice
to see all their hard work paying off. Everyone contributed and I am proud of each and every
swimmer on our team."
Rayhill finished in third place in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:29.35, less than 16 seconds off the
state qualifying standard.
In just its third year, the Glenwood girls swimming program has continued to grow. The Titans
only dual meet loss this year was to SHG. GHS finished second at the conference and sectional
meets and also improved its standing at the Springfield Invite from a year ago.
"It seems that a lot of area teams are struggling in terms of growth," Bryant added. "And to see
this team grow from only about 17 swimmers two years ago to almost 30 this year is very promising
and exciting for the future of GHS swimming."
