As expected, the powerhouse Glenwood High School Scholastic Bowl team had little trouble in
claiming the IHSA Class AA Chatham Regional Monday night at GHS.
Glenwood (84-8) defeated Taylorville 405-144 and Charleston 325-128 to advance to Saturday's
Class AA Mattoon Sectional.  Glenwood is the No. 1 seed but will face stiff competition from No. 2
Carbondale, along with Jerseyville and Belleville Althoff.  The winner advances to the state meet next
weekend in Peoria.
The Titans were led in scoring at Regionals by Mike Korte, who had 11 tossups.  Thomas Chance
had eight, while Aaron Siebrass added five.  Karl Medina had three tossups and Connor Woods two
for Glenwood.
In the regional title match, Glenwood charged to a 183-25 lead at halftime, with the Trojans first
tossup coming on the 15th question.  Chance had five tossups in the first half, including four in a row
to help the Titans open up a big lead.
Korte had three straight tossups in the second half as Glenwood stretched its lead to 310-68
before Coach Dale Boyd substituted the entire lineup for the final couple of questions.
The Glenwood program has never qualified for the State Scholastic Bowl meet, which was
instituted by the IHSA in 1987.  Boyd, in his 10th year at Glenwood, has stated on several occasions
that this is the best team he has coached in his 18 seasons overall.
"Our goal this year has been to win the sectional and advance to the state finals," Boyd stated.
"We have come close to winning the sectional over the years, but Carbondale has always been a big
obstacle.  They are a very strong program, are well coached and have a very talented group of
students.
"While we are seeded No. 1, Carbondale is a very strong team," he continued.  "We defeated them
last weekend, but in a very close match (275-250)."
The schedule for this Saturday's Sectional at Mattoon is: Glenwood vs. Jerseyville and Carbondale
vs. Althoff at 10 a.m.; Glenwood vs. Althoff and Carbondale vs. Jerseyville at 11:15 a.m.; and Glenwood
vs. Carbondale and Althoff vs. Jerseyville at 12:45 p.m.
