Traffic flow around post office changes
Due to the construction on Walnut Street, there are changes to the traffic flow around the
Chatham Post Office.  The following is a statement from Postmaster Jim Hayes:
For at least the next month, the traffic situation on Walnut Street in front of the Chatham Post
Office will be disrupted because of the construction and widening of Walnut Street.
Unfortunately, this will cause some major traffic flow and parking issues.
The flow of traffic around the semi-circle drive in front of the post office has been changed.
Customers will now enter from the west and exit to the east, with the collection boxes being
moved closer to the east exit.  This will become permanent with proper signage when the
construction is completed; however, it may change back and forth during the construction
period.
The flow into each parking area will also be disrupted as construction workers close off each
entrance as well as the street on the east side of the post office, which goes back into the Main
Plaza, while they repair each area.  These repairs will be completed separately so at least one
entrance will remain open at all times.
What this is going to create is customer vehicles being forced to drive behind the post office
into the postal vehicle parking area, which will create a potential safety concern for everyone.
Postal customers need to be aware that postal carriers and vehicles will be maneuvering in
this area throughout the day.
Customers will need to approach the rear of the building very slowly and be aware of any
movement behind the building before they proceed slowly and enter or exit the area.  The ability
to see clearly is impaired by the building.  All postal employees have been made aware of the
situation and instructed to watch carefully.
"If we can all work together, we can make the best of a bad situation without any accidents
occurring," Hayes stated.
Construction is expected to be completed by mid to late October, weather permitting.  The
post office will maintain regular hours throughout the construction process (8-5 M-F and
8:30-11:30 Sat).
"I would like to thank everyone in advance for their business and patience," Hayes added.
