At the stroke of midnight late last Wednesday night, the Kiwanis Club of Chatham inducted eight
new members as part of special ceremonies conducted at the Chatham Area Public Library.
With the official start of the 2009-10 Kiwanis year happening on Oct. 1, the ceremonies were held at
11 p.m. local time (midnight eastern time, where Kiwanis International headquarters are centered in
Indianapolis, IN).
New Chatham Kiwanis President Norm Smith called the evening a "once in a lifetime special
event," with new Kiwanis International President Paul Palazzolo on hand to officially induct and pin the
new members. Illinois-Eastern Iowa District Governor Kevin McConnell was also in attendance and
participated in the ceremonies.
Out of the 8,400 Kiwanis Clubs worldwide, it was the Chatham Kiwanis Club that was the first to
have new members inducted for '09-'10 by Palazzolo, himself officially newly-inducted to the
International President's position at 12:01 a.m. that night.
Palazzolo is from Springfield, though he was working last week out of the Indianapolis
headquarters and was soon driving back east in the wee hours of the night after Wednesday's
ceremonies.
Adding intrigue to the evening was that Palazzolo's wife, Suanne, was one of the eight new
Chatham Kiwanis members inducted. Also inducted were Bill Dever, Amanda Sutherland, Amy Ihnen,
John Benedict, George Sneyd, Connie Sneyd and Bob O'Donnell.
Chatham Kiwanis officers for 2009-10 are: President Norm Smith, Vice President John Rollet,
Secretary Brenda Davis and Treasurer Frank Lewis, along with Immediate Past President Antha Tate.
Directors include Monte Law, Dick Randall, Joe Carter, Carolyn Randall, Lana Benedict and Bonnie
Malcor.
Smith added that he was really looking forward to the Kiwanis Club's first regular meeting of the
new year this week.
"We're hoping to piggy-back on the emotion and energy we had there (last week)," he stated.
"We're inviting the spouses to come in and we're going to make it a celebration. We think this is a
great kick-off to our new year."
