Village to receive federal stimulus money for
Gordon Drive project

The Village of Chatham will be receiving federal stimulus money for a proposed project on Gordon
Drive after all, though about $1 million will still be needed to finish the scope of the work.
The Sangamon Area Transportation Study (SATS) Policy Committee has awarded $500,000 in
federal stimulus money toward Chatham's proposed $1.5 million project on Gordon Drive.
Instead of funding two projects within the City of Springfield, as had been originally thought, the
committee sought to spread monies more throughout the County, according to Village of Chatham
Engineer Mike Williamsen.
Chatham officials will use the stimulus money to construct two box culverts on Gordon Drive, one
near Grindstone and the other just north of Spruce. Additional federal funding will be sought to finish
the project, which would expand Gordon to three lanes (including a middle turn lane) from just south
of the Walnut intersection to about 600 feet north of the Hurstbourne intersection.
The developer of Manor Hill II will pick up the balance of the expanded road work to Hurstbourne,
Williamsen added.
Williamsen cautioned that the Village is under tight deadlines to ensure its qualification for the
federal monies. There are areas of right-of-way that have to be acquired on a timely basis, he added.
Final design work will begin in earnest, along with construction plans. The project could be let for
bids by Jan. 2010, Williamsen said. The project must be let by March 2010, he added. Construction
could start as early as the weather allows next spring, he continued.
The area received about $4.7 in federal stimulus money overall for local road projects, with local
communities submitting proposals for projects they would like to receive federal funding for.
The SATS Policy Committee approved projects at Veterans and Old Jacksonville Road in
Springfield, a County project that involves work on Old Jacksonville Road, intersection work at
Business 55 and Village Center Drive in Sherman and the Chatham Gordon Drive project.
