On a windy and cool day at the Class 2A Chatham Sectional last Saturday, the Glenwood High
girls track team qualified a total of eight girls in six different events to this weekend's IHSA Class 2A
state meet in Charleston.
"The sectional went about as good as we could have possibly hoped for," GHS head coach Ryan
Staley stated. "Our 4x100 team didn't make it, but our 4x400 team surprised everybody in beating
SHG and Springfield High."
The Titans' 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams are headed to Charleston, along with qualifiers from the
pole vault (Pia Goodman), triple jump (Heidi Goetsch), high jump (Diana Defoe) and 100 meter
hurdles (Defoe).
Defoe is also a member of the 4x200 relay team, which includes Astrid Osborne, Marchay Bell and
Marissa Stafford. Stafford and Bell are also members of the 'loaded up' 4x400 relay team which
includes Kayla Miller and Kelly McMahon.
Stalwarts Defoe and Goodman emerged as sectional champions for Glenwood. Defoe ran a
15.29 to claim the 100 hurdles and Goodman continued her rebound from a shoulder injury to clear
9' 3" in the pole vault. She posted a 10' 9" height at Monday's Capital Area Classic, and almost nailed
11' 3", Staley added.
"Pia looks like she's back," he said. "She says she feels great."
The steady Defoe has made the journey to Eastern Illinois University an annual affair. She took
second place in the high jump at 4' 11".
Goetsch continued her impressive season, taking second in the triple jump at 34' 10.75", besting
the state qualifying standard in the process.
"Heidi has been a huge addition for us," Staley added. "Her work ethic is second to none."
The 4x200 relay team didn't enjoy its best day of the season, but got the job done. The Titans lost a
close battle with Southeast, which beat the qualifying standard at 1:46.58. GHS was right behind in 1:
47.06.
"If those handoffs are good at state, the girls know they have a definite shot to get down to the 1:
44s and place very high," Staley commented.
Glenwood's 4x100 relay team also had a shot coming in, but ended up fourth in 52.64 seconds.
In the team standings, Southeast was first with 114 points, while Springfield High had 91 and
Glenwood was third with 84. The focus for the Titans was getting as many girls to state as possible,
not necessarily achieving team points.
The 2A state meet will be held Friday and Saturday. Finals for all three classes will be held
Saturday. GHS results from Sectionals are as follows:
