Though she was not named to the All-Tournament Team, Glenwood High School senior Melissa
Pickett made her presence felt last weekend at the Titan Thanksgiving Tourney.
Pickett scored 18 points in leading the Titan girls to a 44-36 win over Rochester on Saturday night, and
she had 14 points on Friday night as Glenwood took out SHG 47-43 in their CS8 opener.
"Melissa had a nice tournament," Glenwood head coach Mark Lash stated. "She is by far the most
improved player from last year on our team. She's doing it all - rebounding, defending and stepping up
and scoring."
The Titans finished 4-1, losing only to Dunlap on the tourney's opening weekend. GHS defeated
Champaign Central 42-33 this past Saturday afternoon. Dunlap (5-0) claimed the tournament title,
while SHG, Rochester and Mattoon all finished 2-3, with Central at 0-5.
Glenwood's Allie Hogan and Erin Egolf were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Dunlap's Jen
Erlandson earning MVP honors.
GHS 44, Rochester 36
The Titans and Rockets were locked in a close duel throughout, and Rochester held a 36-35 lead
with 2:55 left in the game before Glenwood scored the final nine points of the contest.
A basket by Pickett with 2:42 left put Glenwood up for good at 37-36, and then free throws down the
stretch from Egolf, Alyssa Esperum and Pickett clinched the victory.
A game of statistical oddities showed the Titans with just seven rebounds, but only nine turnovers.
GHS also made 11-of-24 field goals and 16-of-23 free throws. By contrast, Rochester was 13-of-31
from the field and had 19 rebounds but 16 turnovers. The Rockets were whistled for 21 fouls, to 10 for
Glenwood.
•After an opening possession that last nearly two minutes, the Titans used late 3-pointers from
Sydney Alstott and Kristine Kerr to take a 13-7 lead after one quarter. GHS led 17-14 at halftime.
"We just weren't very good offensively in the first half," Lash stated. "We weren't cutting hard or
screening well. We weren't ready to shoot the basketball. But I was happy with our defense the entire
game."
In the third quarter, Hogan, saddled with foul problems in the first half, picked up her third foul early,
and shortly thereafter Lash earned a technical foul for labeling an official's call as "ridiculous", and had
to sit on the bench the rest of the game.
Pickett, however, kept the Titans in front, nailing three 3's and two free throws to give Glenwood a 30-
27 lead after three quarters.
Things see-sawed back and forth in the fourth quarter until the final minute, when the Titans hit 7-of-
8 free throws and the Rockets couldn't buy a bucket, making 3-of-15 field goals in the period.
Pickett had 18 points to lead Glenwood, while Esperum had eight and Egolf six. Hogan added five
points, while Alstott and Kerr had three each and freshman Kim Wilson had one. Pickett had four 3-
point field goals, while Kerr and Alstott had one each. Katie Turley led Rochester with 14 points, while
Katelyn Wise had nine points and seven rebounds.
GHS 42, Ch. Central 33
Glenwood trailed Champaign Central 18-16 at halftime, but a 17-point third quarter put the Titans up
33-29. GHS made 19-of-28 free throws in the contest, with sophomore Emily Lundin making 6-of-7
and Wilson pouring in 5-of-6 attempts.
Hogan and Wilson each scored nine points to lead the Titans, while Lundin and Egolf had eight
apiece. Pickett had five points, all coming in the fourth quarter, while Esperum had two points and
Alstott one.
Central, led by Mia Gilliam's 12 points, made 4-of-6 free throws and had three 3-point field goals.
GHS 47, SHG 43
The Titans jumped out to a 26-17 lead on the Blazers, then held on for the win despite making only
13-of-29 free throws overall. Glenwood had eight 3-point field goals, three by Pickett, two each by
Esperum and Egolf, and one from Hogan.
Pickett had 14 points to lead the Titans, while Egolf added 10. Esperum and Alstott each scored
seven points, while Hogan had five and Lundin four for Glenwood.
Mallory Beck led SHG with 19 points. The Blazers had two 3-point field goals and made 7-of-13 free
throws overall.
"We didn't know what to expect from this team," Lash summed up. "But I am very pleased with the
effort and how hard we play and how different people are stepping up. The win over SHG was huge -
that's a win we didn't get last year in the conference. We let Dunlap get away - if just finish that one we
could very easily be 5-0 right now. Dunlap's a very good team but we had our chances to beat them."
•Coming up, Glenwood hosts Jacksonville Thursday (sophomores, 6 p.m., followed by varsity) and
Normal West Monday, Dec. 8 (sophs, 6 p.m., followed by varsity).
