Local election Tuesday, April 7

Election Day is coming next Tuesday, April 7, and there are several contested local races, along
with a few that are uncontested.
•Voters in the Ball-Chatham School District will be asked to vote YES or NO to the following
question: "Shall the Board of Education of Community Unit School District No. 5, Sangamon County,
Illinois, build and equip a 500-student elementary school and pay for such school from District funds
currently reserved and available for such purposes?"
Last week, the board purchased 145 acres of land adjacent to Glenwood High School, with initial
plans calling for the elementary school to be built on farm ground directly west of GHS.  The
referendum will only be asking voters for permission to build a new school, using district reserves.
•In the Village of Chatham, races include President (Mayor), Clerk and Trustee.  Tom Gray is
running unopposed for Mayor, and Pat Schad is unopposed for Clerk.  Both include four-year terms.
For trustee, Matthew Mau, Joe Schatteman, Charles D. (Chuck) Herr and Michael McGrath are running
for three positions.  All carry four-year terms as well.  Village of Chatham elections are nonpartisan.
Schatteman, Herr and McGrath are all incumbents.
•There are four positions open on the Ball-Chatham Board of Education.  From Township 15N,
Range 5W (Woodside), candidates are John Kwedar, Patrick Hansen and Lisa Weitzel.  From
Township 14N, Range 5W (Ball), candidates are Rick Carr and Linda Carter.  And from Township
14N, Range 6W (Chatham), Alan Harling is the lone candidate.
Due to membership restrictions (no more than three members from any one congressional
township can be on the board at the same time), no more than two candidates from Woodside may
be elected, and no more than one candidate from Ball may be elected.
Therefore, Kwedar, Hansen and Weitzel are competing for two positions; Carr and Carter are
competing for one position; and Harling is essentially running unopposed.  All positions carry four-
year terms.
Voters will be able to vote for any of the candidates, up to four, but the membership restrictions will
be enacted, no matter how the vote totals shake out.
•In Ball Township, candidates are running unopposed in all positions:  Township Supervisor -
Michael Blankenship (Republican), Township Clerk - Barbara Germann (Republican), Township
Assessor - John Chris Gregurich (Republican), Township Collector - Carolyn Halford (Republican),
Highway Commissioner - Marty Mau (Republican).  All positions carry four-year terms.
For Township Trustee, candidates are Daniel Clark (Republican), Donald Kauerauf (Republican),
Dwight Morrison (Republican) and William Sallenger (Republican).  All positions carry four-year terms.
•In Chatham Township, Del McCord (Republican) is running unopposed for Township Supervisor,
while Matt J. Whalen (Republican) is running unopposed for Township Clerk.    Chris Kofahl
(Republican) is running unopposed for Township Assessor, while Georgia Kent (Republican) is
running unopposed for Township Collector.
There are two candidates for Highway Commissioner - Shane Workman (Republican) and Gregory
Skinner (Independent).
For Township Trustee, there are eight candidates for four positions - David Sullivan (Republican),
Charles E. Bliefnick (Republican), David S. Drabing (Republican), Larry E. Brewer (Republican),
Robert Jones (Democrat), Ann Sherlock-Jones (Democrat), Joyce Karnes (Democrat) and Diana
Carlile (Democrat).
For Township Community Building Board of Managers, three candidates are running unopposed -
Charlotte Dexheimer, Jan Brewer and Gary E. Brown.  All positions up for election in Chatham
Township carry four-year terms.
•For the Chatham Area Public Library District, there are four candidates running unopposed for
positions on the Board of Trustees.  They are Gina Snow, Jeff Adkisson, Megan L. Becker and Eric L.
Fitzgerald.
•Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 7. Local voting facilities include, Chatham
Township: Chatham 1, 2, 5 and 6 - Chatham Community Building, 109 W. Mulberry; Chatham 3 and 4
- St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 706 E. Spruce.
For Ball Township: Ball 1 - Sugar Creek United Methodist Church, 1022 New City Road; Ball 2 - Ball
Township Hall, 35 Rhodes Ave.; Ball 3, 4 and 5 - Chatham Baptist Church, 1500 E. Walnut.
