Numbers are strong and there's plenty of experience to go around in the Glenwood High School
boys soccer program.
Though several key seniors were lost due to graduation from the 12-6-3 team of a year ago,
there's also plenty of varsity experience returning in 2009.
Goalie Zach Wienhoff and Justin Lex, Kyle Lundin, Cal Austiff and Will Veliz are a few of the names
that have moved on, but GHS head coach Jay Lipe is looking for a big season out of his charges.
"We have a lot of young guys with significant varsity experience," Lipe stated. "It's very nice to see.
A lot of guys got in the weight room and got stronger. We hope to rely on that size and experience in
the coming years.
"The last couple of years, if you lined us up against our opponents, we looked like a freshman or
JV team size-wise," Lipe continued. "Now, we're physically going to be bigger and stronger, to go
along with our skills and tactical sense. It should be a promising year."
Juniors Devin Pettis (9 goals, 10 assists) and Chapin Richards (10 goals, 8 assists) are the top
returning offensive scorers for the Titans.
"We expect a lot of competition for playing time," Lipe added. "We've got 20 guys, any number of
whom could become starters. We may have a different lineup to start each game, and that gives us a
lot of flexibility and coverage if we get guys injured."
Junior Santiago Cabrera and sophomore Andrew Watters are back from injuries suffered before
the season last year, and both are looking good in practice, Lipe said.
Seniors Tim Burch and Joe Martin are the top goalkeepers, with Burch having a leg up at this
point. Fellow seniors Brennan Gunville, Jack Graves and Andrew Koch bring plenty of experience to
the table as well.
Lipe was also pleased with the program's numbers, which stand at 60, including 19 freshmen.
The Titans have a busy start to their season, with games against Quincy Notre Dame, Whitney Young
and Urbana this week before a home contest against Rochester Tuesday.
"We'll find out where we are right off the bat," he stated."
Defending Class 2A runner-up SHG will be tough again in the Central State Eight conference race,
and Springfield High should have a solid group, Lipe said. Glenwood finished in second place at 6-1
in the CS8 race last year, with SHG taking the title at 7-0.
Other varsity players not yet mentioned are: juniors Blake DeLong, Mark Dice, Richard Doering,
Nick Ellinger, Alex Klintworth, Sean Lex, Chad Long, Thomas McVey, Joe Murray and Elliot
Thompson, along with sophomore Connor Carnduff and freshman Patrick Flahive.
Glenwood has added a new tournament to the schedule in Collinsville at the Gateway Soccer
Classic Oct. 2-3. That tourney replaces the previous annual trip to Morton. Several nationally-ranked
teams will be in Collinsville.
The Titan Invite will be held Sept. 25-26, with Collinsville replacing O'Fallon.
Assistant coaches for the Titans are: Greg Lipe, Kyle Franke, Tom Johnson, Tommy Johnson and
student teacher Chris Bertolino.
