Walnut St. crossing to be closed for repairs
The Walnut Street railroad crossing in Chatham is due up for repairs soon, Village of Chatham
officials have said, so local motorists may have to alter travel plans for a while.
Village Director Meredith Branham said Tuesday that indications are work could begin next
week, and once repair work begins, the crossing will be closed for an undetermined length of time.
The repairs are not done by village workers; the work is done by railroad personnel and there is
no set timetable in advance for when the work will begin and end.
Local motorists should be advised that the crossing will be closed soon and to prepare to plan
alternate routes.
•Also, work is continuing around the Walnut/Park intersection, where turn lanes and traffic
signals will be added.  P. H. Broughton is the general contractor.  Estimates for when the work will
be completed are now at late August or early September.
•The village's summer Motor Fuel Tax road construction projects are underway, with work
continuing for the next several weeks.
Streets receiving milling and resurfacing include: Plummer from Route 4 to the east, Spruce St.
from the library to Park, Teal from Chukar to Plover and Mallard from Virginia to Chukar.
Streets that will be oil and chipped include: College from Walnut to S. Grand, W. Chestnut west
of Church, Downing north to West Chestnut, Churchill, Buckingham, Winston, Oxford and the
Community Park parking lot.
