Holm to be named police
chief

Following a two-month search process involving five internal
candidates, Chatham Mayor Tom Gray has picked John Holm to
be the next Chatham Police Chief.
In addition, Vern Foli will be promoted to the new position of
Deputy Chief.  Both moves are subject to approval by the Village
Board, and that vote is expected to come at the July 28 meeting.
"We conducted a thorough evaluation process, involving Randy
Council and Human Nature," Gray explained.  "We did a lot of
interviews and testing and I felt John had the best qualities for the
job."
Gray declined to name the other officers involved in the
process, though there were three selected as finalists for the
chief position.  Gray tabbed Holm and Foli after an hour-long
closed session at Tuesday's village board meeting.
Gray added that he considered adding a Captain or Deputy
Chief position, settling on the latter since it can be appointed by
the Mayor.
Holm, 45, a Chatham native, attended Chatham schools and
has worked for the Chatham Police Department over 17 years.
"It's a great honor," he stated.  "I grew up in Chatham and it's
something I've dreamed of.  I've got a lot of ties to the community
and it's a great opportunity to be able to give something back to
the community."
Holm has served as the department's Public Information
Officer the last several years under Chief Roy Barnett.  Jim
Dodson took over as Chief when Barnett retired May 1, but
Dodson is expected to retire in the coming weeks.  Holm's official
ascension to the Chief position should come very soon after the
July 28 vote.
Though details are still being worked out, it is expected that
Holm and Foli will work together on the day shift, giving the
Chatham P.D. two administrators during that time period.
Foli admitted to some disappointment, but said, "I'm very happy
and I want to thank the mayor and council for this opportunity.  I'm
here to support the new chief 100 percent, and move forward with
the changes he looks to propose.  I'm sure we won't agree on
everything, but he is my chief and my boss."
Foli, 38, has been with the Chatham P.D. since January 1998,
and he has 13 years experience overall, including cups of coffee
in his hometown of Kincaid and Auburn.  Foli and Holm have
worked together on the day shift in Chatham the past eight years.
