The Glenwood Middle School 8th grade girls volleyball team took down Rochester 25-19, 25-17
Monday night to claim the IESA Class 8-4A Springfield Washington Sectional title.
The Titans (21-4), runners-up at state a year ago as 7th graders, will face defending 7th grade state
champion Bloomington (24-1) at this year's state tournament at Normal Kingsley Saturday.
The quarterfinal matchup is set for 11:15 a.m. The winner plays in the semis at 3 p.m., with the third
place and championship matches set for Tuesday, March 24, at 6 and 7:30 p.m.
The Glenwood-Bloomington winner will face the winner of Lansing Memorial (12-8) and Champaign
Jefferson (22-3) in the 3 p.m. semifinal. The Titans have four losses this season, three to Mt. Pulaski
and one earlier this year to Bloomington. Bloomington defeated GMS 25-22, 25-19 in last year's 7th
grade state title match.
•In the first game against Rochester, the Titans jumped out to a 10-3 lead, as BriAnna Edgar had
three service points and Alaina Bisch added two, along with a kill and block from Taylor Copp. But GMS
surrendered the lead, with Rochester's Kelsey Brune running off five straight service points and the
Titans committing several return errors.
Down 16-14, the Titans roared to a 11-3 finish, with a sideout kill from Bisch sparking a five-point run
from Brooke Riemenschneider and her wicked line-drive serve. Bisch and Copp finished off the game,
with Copp smashing four kills to account for the final four Glenwood points, and Bisch adding three
service points.
In the second game, GMS again fell behind at 12-10 and 14-13. But after a sideout kill from Morgan
Tudor, the Titans surged ahead 22-14, as Tudor served up eight straight points. Copp and Madison
Bandy had kills during the run, and Glenwood closed out the match after a kill attempt by Rochester's
Lauren Mantei was long.
•At last week's Quincy Regional, the Titans defeated Jacksonville Turner 27-25, 25-20 in the title
match. Earlier, GMS defeated Springfield Lincoln 25-12, 25-16.
Against Turner, the first game had plenty of drama. Playing in a turn of the 20th century gym in front
of a hostile crowd filled with Jacksonville fans, Glenwood surged to a 12-5 lead. Tudor and Katie Lance
had early service runs, and Copp had a sideout kill followed by two service points of her own.
But Turner closed the gap and eventually went ahead 20-16 after four points from Kelsi Richardson,
along with kills from Bentley Stewart and Dara Sweatman.
Following a net serve, Copp smacked three straight kills, off three straight Lance points, and Lance
kept the roll going to put GMS up 21-20 following a kill by Riemenschneider. GMS went up 24-23 after a
kill by Bisch, then 25-24 after a kill by Tudor and 26-25 after a kill by Bisch again. Bisch then finished off
the game with an ace.
The second game was a close affair throughout, the turning point coming late as the Titans trailed
17-15. Bisch served up a couple of points, along with a kill from Copp, to put GMS up 18-17. Three
points from Tudor, along with a block from Copp, put Glenwood up 22-18.
The teams traded points down the stretch, with Riemenschneider earning the winning kill off a serve
from Copp.
•In the regional semifinals, Glenwood had little trouble with Lincoln. Riemenschneider had an
early four-point service run in the first game to put GMS up 7-1, but the gap closed to 14-11 before a
Cress timeout.
Glenwood scored 11 of the final 12 points of the game, as Riemenschneider had another run, this
one six points long and including two aces and kills from Bisch and Bandy. Bisch finished off the game
with three points, including two aces and a kill from Tudor.
In the second game, Edgar had four aces during a seven-point run to put GMS up 7-0. Lincoln
fought back to 9-9 before the Titans, behind the serving and hitting of Tudor, went ahead 15-9. Kills by
Copp and Bisch stretched the lead to 21-12. GMS closed out the game on a net serve by Lincoln's
Breonna Lewis.
