Cunningham, Kemp advance to State meet
Senior Trey Cunningham and junior Jason Kemp have qualified for the IHSA Class 2A state
wrestling meet, to be held this weekend in Champaign.
Cunningham (34-3) claimed the sectional title at 215 pounds at last weekend's Class 2A
Springfield High Sectional.  He scored three impressive victories, including a semifinal pin over highly-
rated Caleb Blaney of Urbana and a 4-0 decision over Patrick Holcomb of Lanphier in the finals.
Cunningham has earned the No. 3 seed at the state meet, and will face either Gage Harrah (36-3)
or Niko Miller (25-2) in a quarterfinal matchup.  Grant Goebel (45-4) of Montini is the No. 1 seed, with
Dan Howell (35-2) of Oswego No. 2.
"This is the first year the IHSA has seeded the brackets," Glenwood head coach Tom Johnson Jr.
stated.  "And Trey got the No. 3 seed and a first round bye.
"Trey had a good sectional," Johnson continued.  "The Blaney kid was No. 3 in the state, and we
looked at that as a crucial match.  He owned the kid for three periods, and in the last 30 seconds
pinned him.
"We think Trey's chances are good," Johnson added.  "All the hard work with Coach Mosier is paying
off for him.  He doesn't get rattled too often, and that helps him a lot."
•Kemp (30-7) claimed the third place bout at 103, taking a 15-9 decision over Jerrin Moffitt of
Champaign Central.  Kemp finished 3-1 at sectionals, losing only to Kyle Graumenz of Troy Triad.
Graumenz finished second to champion David Pearce of Bethalto.
Kemp added victories over opponents from Lincoln and Champaign Centennial before claiming the
third place bout.
In his first round match at state, Kemp will tangle with Chris Maier (20-11) of Crystal Lake.  The
winner of that bout will face No. 1 seed Topher Carton (33-0), a freshman from Rock Island Alleman.
•Glenwood had seven wrestlers compete at sectionals, and Johnson was hopeful to get a couple
more out to the state meet.
"We did not have a good round Friday night," he explained. "We thought maybe Alex Butler and
Bobby Lee had a good shot, but it just didn't happen for us.  It's good to get two to state, it really is."
Brennan Gunville finished 1-2 at 112, while Joe Murray (119) and Lee (125) each lost their only
match, as did Max Nutt at 135.
At 130, Butler (30-10) finished 2-2.  He lost the third place match by pin in 1:43 to Curtis Neubauer
(27-7) of Triad.
