Girls outlast QND in triple overtime

QUINCY - Things weren't exactly going Sydney Alstott's way during the latter stages of last week's
sectional final girls soccer game at Quincy Notre Dame.
Alstott, who received a yellow card midway through the second overtime, ended up the hero by
scoring the only goal of the contest as Glenwood defeated QND 1-0 in three overtimes to claim the
Class AA QND Sectional title.
There were over 100 minutes of soccer played without a goal, and the contest would have gone to
penalty kicks if not for a new IHSA rule instituted this year to where there are now four 10-minute
overtime periods instead of two before PK's are needed. The "golden goal" sudden victory rule still
applies to all overtime periods.
Just over three minutes into the third overtime, the Titans were awarded a free kick in the QND
end. Rather than firing the ball at the goal, Erin Egolf decided to chip a pass over to Lindsey Koch,
who sent a pass forward to freshman Dani Torry.
"Dani crossed it from the end line right in the middle," Alstott explained. "In the scramble in front I
just kicked it through the goalie's legs."
The goal sent the euphoric Titans onto the field for a dogpile celebration and the reality that their
dreams of a state tournament berth were only one win away.
Alstott admitted she was "frustrated" after getting the yellow card, but she went to the bench and
regrouped before the third OT session.
"They played really well," Alstott said of the Raiders, who finished their season at 18-3-3. "They
were a very good team. It really showed that we've improved a lot. We're really a team now."
"I don't know if this is the most talented team we've had, it's probably not," added Glenwood head
coach Jay Lipe. "But they have great team chemistry, and they never quit.
"I was just praying it didn't go to a fourth overtime," he continued. "We do different words from John
Wooden's pyramid before every game, and the word today was 'fight', and to keep fighting and don't
give up. We got the opportunity and Sydney put it away."
•QND controlled the ball a little more than the Titans did in the first half, with the Glenwood
defense and goalie Caitlyn Moody constantly on their toes. Moody made a couple of big saves,
notably on QND All-Stater Erin Thomas less than 13 minutes in.
In the second half, Moody had a couple of more big saves, including denying Thomas on a 1-on-1
head-on opportunity less than 10 minutes in. Later, Moody had a big save on Leigh McLaughlin.
Egolf had a shot over the goal midway through the second half.
The Titans seemed to get stronger during the overtime periods, and Egolf was injured after she
was kicked in the throat late in the second OT. She returned shortly thereafter and the Titans had a
great chance right as the period expired, as Alstott centered to Egolf, whose header was just wide.
The Titans ended up with 12 shots on goal, to eight for QND. Sophomore Megan Rabe tended
goal for the Raiders.
"We beat Cary-Grove in the Mt. Prospect Tournament, and that helped prepare us for a game like
this," Lipe added. "There's a pretty good rivalry between us and Quincy Notre Dame, and this is the
first time we've beat them on this actual field. We've beaten them on other fields in Quincy but not
here."
