Senators edge Glenwood 3-2

A game of 'what ifs' and missed opportunities ended in pure frustration last Saturday afternoon,
as the Glenwood boys soccer team saw its season come to a close after a 3-2 loss to Springfield
High in the championship game of the Class 2A Chatham Regional.
The Titans (10-9-2) outshot Springfield 15-5, but in the end, it was the Senators (16-7) who were
holding the regional plaque.
"Unfortunately, the game of soccer is cruel like that sometimes," Glenwood head coach Jay Lipe
stated.  "I feel bad for our kids because they gave a great effort.  We just missed some chances and
Springfield defended well at times, and at other times we just missed our opportunities."
With the score tied 2-2, the winning goal was scored with 14:09 to play.  A deep feed from Zabian
Morris was controlled by Erick Butt, who was 1-on-1 with Glenwood goalie Sean Lex.  As Lex came
out to cut off the angle, Butt sent a shot towards the far left post.  The ball eventually bounded off the
post and over and in to the right side of the goal.
•In the first half, Glenwood went up 1-0 eight minutes in, as Tyler Jackson sent a corner kick that
was headed into the goal by Santiago Cabrera.
Though playing against a stiff southwest breeze, the Titans continued to apply pressure.  Connor
Carnduff blasted a shot off the crossbar, and Cabrera hit the post on a big rush, but the score
remained just 1-0 before the Senators tied it with 11:31 left.
Springfield's Greg Farias and Lex both converged on a loose ball in front of the Glenwood goal at
about the same time, but before their collision Farias was able to poke the ball forward and into the
goal.
"Their kid made a nice hustle play there, but we should have been up 3-0 or 4-0 before that
chance," Lipe lamented.  "In the playoffs, you have to put chances away.  And that's a main story of
our season, the lack of being able to finish our chances."
•The score was tied 1-1 at halftime, but it didn't take long for Springfield to grab its first lead, as
Brandon Stolleis sent a quick chip to Mike Severino who beat Lex just 31 seconds into the second
half.
"We struggled all year with inconsistency with things like that," Lipe added.  "It's a lack of maturity
or poor coaching, I don't know.  But we give up silly goals like that and you can't do that, no matter
how well you play throughout the game."
Still, it didn't take long for Glenwood to recover, as two minutes later Cabrera smashed a free kick
into the Springfield wall, the rebound coming in front to a diving Carnduff, who sent a left foot shot
from about eight yards high into the goal to tie the score at 2-2.
"Our kids never gave up," Lipe stated.  "Connor made a great play following up that shot."
Following Butt's winning goal, the Titans had a couple more good chances, including a shot by
Devin Pettis that shot off the left post and a close-in shot by Alex Klintworth that was handled by
Springfield goalie Chris Barkley.  With 5:30 to play, Klintworth headed a corner kick just over the goal.
•Seniors on this year's team include goalies Joe Martin and Tim Burch, along with forwards
Andrew Koch and Jack Graves, and sweeper Brennan Gunville.  The Titans will have a very
experienced team returning next season.
"We need some leadership to step up," Lipe explained.  "We need some guys in that junior class
to determine what their goals will be for their senior year.  They have to act on those and prepare
themselves to have the opportunity to finish their senior year on a high note."
Lex will have a leg up in the goalie competition, but Lipe said sophomore Colton Schreyer and
freshman Braden Hack would also be in the mix.  The Titans finished the season with six shutouts.
Chapin Richards led Glenwood with 13 goals and seven assists, while Cabrera had 11 goals and
10 assists.  Pettis had 11 goals and three assists, and Klintworth added eight goals and four assists.
