Girls soccer team looks to build on CS8,
postseason success

The Glenwood High School girls soccer team got its season off to a strong start last Friday night,
defeating Rochester 4-0.
Ali Traina and Erin Egolf scored goals in the first four minutes of the first half, then Traina and
freshman Abby Juhlin added second half goals for Glenwood. Freshman Cara Moody earned the
shutout in goal for the Titans, who outshot Rochester 17-5. Moody had four saves.
•Glenwood and head coach Jay Lipe have enjoyed a much better spring than last year, when bad
weather forced the first three weeks of practice indoors.
"We've been outside a lot this year," he stated. "We've got a good group of kids and we got off to a
good start against Rochester. Now we have a week off to improve our fitness and improve on some
things we were exposed at."
The Titans lost several key players from last year's squad, which finished 19-2-1 overall and 6-0-1
in the Central State Eight Conference. GHS earned its seventh straight conference title in 2008, tying
with SHG, and Glenwood hasn't lost a conference game since 2001.
Goalie Caitlyn Moody, forwards Brittany Coffinbargar and Taylor Buske and backer Kelly Short were
among the key graduates, but the cupboard is nowhere near bare, as two-time All-Stater Erin Egolf
leads a strong cast of returnees.
Glenwood claimed both regional and sectional titles in 2008, falling 2-0 to Belleville Althoff at the
Class AA Super-Sectionals. The IHSA has implemented three classes in girls soccer starting this
year, altering the Titans' postseason path. Teams such as Edwardsville, O'Fallon, Quincy Senior and
Granite City will be in Class 3A, but foes such as Althoff, Quincy Notre Dame, Troy Triad and SHG will
be with Glenwood in 2A.
"It will be interesting to see those pairings," Lipe added. "And it's amazing and a tribute to our kids
that we've put together a run like this. Teams will be looking to knock us off."
Egolf had 23 goals and nine assists last year, while senior Sydney Alstott had eight goals and 10
assists and fellow senior Jenny Mosley had eight goals and seven assists.
Those three join a number of varsity returnees, including seniors Abby Vorreyer, Annie Kwedar and
Chelsey Watters, juniors Traina, Lindsey Koch, Ashley Kulavic, Eryn Sullivan, Rylie Sullivan and Elena
Pappas, along with sophomore Dani Torry.
"We've got a good group of senior girls," Lipe continued. "We have inexperience at goalie, but
we've got experience at all other positions."
Cara Moody and junior Colleen Quick are the goalies, with Quick battling an achilles injury early
on.
Freshmen Juhlin and Bre Gardner are also on the varsity and will see action, Lipe added.
The schedule includes the Titan Invite May 1-2 and the Mt. Prospect Tourney April 24-25.
Glenbrook South is an addition as a non-conference foe April 18.
Numbers in the Glenwood program are strong, with 47 total, including 24 freshmen. Lipe said
numbers in other area programs are down, and on some days the varsity team will play first before
the JV contest.
SHG will again present the stiffest challenge in the conference race, Lipe added, and Springfield
will be improved.
Assistant coaches are Greg Lipe, who will handle the goalies, along with Pam Hogan and
volunteer Bethany Rollet, a GHS graduate who is currently student teaching in Williamsville.
