The Glenwood High School girls volleyball team opened Central State Eight conference play
Tuesday night, taking care of Taylorville 25-15, 25-14 in action at GHS.
The Titans (4-3, 1-0 CS8) were led in service points by Alyssa Esperum with 12 and Alexa Frank with
11.  Esperum had four aces, while senior Hannah Werth had three.  Werth added 14 kills, while
sophomore Tori Falter had seven.
Abby Cress had 11 assists, while Werth had eight for the Titans.  Falter had four blocks and Ali
McGrath two, while Werth, Esperum and Jenna Taft registered six digs apiece.
Both teams and coaching staffs were outfitted in pink attire, as the evening was called, "Volley for the
Cure '08,", and donations were accepted for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
•The Titans finished 3-2 at the Edwardsville Invite this past weekend, claiming seventh place overall
in the highly-competitive event.  Included was a three-game loss to conference rival Lincoln that came
down to the final point.
Asked to assess his team after the first week of competition, Glenwood coach Larry Sample stated,
"Truthfully, we would like to be a little bit further along than we are.  We're bringing in eight kids from the
JV team last year, and it's a matter of getting the right people in the right places right now.  Tonight
(against Taylorville) was better, and it's gonna be a matter of continuing to work kids in and out of the
lineup to see who's ready to step in and take over."
St. Louis Incarnate Word, a perennial power, claimed the Edwardsville Invite title, while the host
Tigers took fifth and Lincoln was sixth.
On Friday night, the Titans defeated O'Fallon 25-18, 25-11.  Freshman Shea Elmore had 11 service
points, while senior Lauren Galloway had nine.  Cress had 12 assists, and Werth added nine.  Werth
had 13 kills and two blocks, while Falter had seven kills and three blocks.  Senior Nicole Layton had
three kills for the Titans.
Also on Friday, Glenwood defeated the Cor Jesu JV 25-13, 25-15.  Esperum led the Titans with 14
service points, while Werth had 11.  Werth added 16 kills, 11 assists and one block, while Cress had
15 assists.  Falter contributed six kills and five blocks, with Ashley McGrath adding two kills and a
block.  Meaghan Fischer had two kills for Glenwood.
On Saturday, GHS lost 25-13, 25-20 to Freeburg.  Werth had 10 assists, seven kills, seven service
points and one block, and Falter had five kills and two blocks.  Esperum had seven points and Cress
added seven assists for the Titans.
Glenwood then lost a heartbreaker to Lincoln, with the match coming down to the final point - 23-25,
25-20, 16-17.
"We're going to look forward to playing them again," Sample explained.  "I tried some different things
and did of lot of changing around.  I don't think it was a true read for us."
Werth had 19 kills, 12 service points, 10 assists and two blocks for Glenwood, while Falter had 17
assists and nine kills.  Taft contributed 17 service points, and Ali McGrath had three blocks and Frank
