Softball girls fall 7-3 to Lincoln
The Lincoln Railers pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of two Glenwood errors to
prevail 7-3 in a Central State Eight Conference softball contest Tuesday in Chatham.
The Titans fell to 6-7, 2-2 in the CS8 with the loss, while Lincoln improved to 6-5 and 3-0. The
Railers and SHG now sit atop the conference.
Lincoln had five doubles, along with a solo homer to center by Whitney Birk. Winning pitcher
Desirae Lercher went the distance, striking out eight and walking three while allowing six hits.
For Glenwood, Erin Driskell started, pitching a total of 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and
three earned runs while striking out two and walking none. Brittany Osborn, who took the loss,
came on in relief in the fifth and allowed three runs on six hits before Driskell came back to
pitch with two outs in the sixth.
Offensively for Glenwood, designated player Jessica Meyer had a single, walk and reached on
an error, scoring all three GHS runs in the process. In the second, Meyer walked, stole second
and scored on an error, while in the fourth, she had an infield single and later scored on an RBI
hit by Lauren Galloway.
In the bottom of the sixth, Meyer scored on an RBI bloop double to left by Driskell.
Lincoln's Birk gave the Railers a 3-2 lead in the sixth with a solo homer to deep center, and
later in the inning Lincoln got RBI hits from shortstop Amanda Podbelsek and outfielder Rachel
James off Osborn. The Railers added two unearned runs in the seventh after catcher Kaitlyn
England mishandled a throw home from Kim Franke, allowing two runs to score with two outs.
The Titans finished with six hits, with Alyssa Esperum, Franke and Sami Estill getting one
each. Galloway and Meyer each had a stolen base.
There was an interesting moment in the sixth inning, when Driskell returned to pitch and
replaced Osborn on the mound, as the Lincoln coaching staff questioned whether or not she
should be allowed to have any warm-up tosses. Driskell was, in fact, allowed to warm up, but
the incident did not go unnoticed in the Glenwood dugout.
•Glenwood lost 8-1 to Normal Community Monday, as Allyssa Turner, Osborn and Sarah
Garrison all pitched. Turner took the loss, allowing four earned runs in two innings. NC scored
four runs in the second and four more in the sixth off Garrison.
The Titans had two hits in the game, a double by Franke and a single by Driskell. Four walks
in the seventh inning produced the only Glenwood run, scored by Jennifer Saucier, the RBI
going to Meyer. Glenwood had 11 strikeouts against Normal pitcher Megan Nonnemacher.
•Glenwood defeated Williamsville 6-4 last week. Osborn came on in relief of Turner to gain
the victory, with Driskell pitching the final two innings to earn the save. The Bullets scored all of
their runs in the fourth inning, on three walks and two singles.
Turner pitched three-plus innings, allowing three hits and four walks. Osborn pitched two
innings and allowed two hits, while Driskell pitched two perfect innings.
At the plate, Driskell had three singles and three runs scored, and Saucier added a single,
double and two RBIs. Meyer had two hits, while Franke had a single and run scored. The
Titans had nine hits in all.
•Three Glenwood pitchers combined for an 11-1 win over Southeast last week. Driskell
started and got the victory, pitching three innings and allowing two hits and an unearned run
while striking out two and walking one. Osborn and Turner followed with one inning of work
each.
At the plate, Shelbi Tudor had a two-run double and an RBI single along with a run scored,
while England had a two-run single and walk. Saucier had an RBI triple, double and three runs
scored, while Driskell had two singles and two runs scored. Franke added a double, single
and two RBIs, while Meyer had a single, double and RBI. The Titans had 12 hits in all.
