Junior Michael Greene opened the game by draining three straight 3-point field goals, and
sophomore Tyler Thurston closed the first quarter with a 3 of his own as the Glenwood boys cruised to
a 59-39 victory over Taylorville last Friday night in the Central State Eight Conference opener for both
schools.
The Titans (3-1, 1-0 CS8) led 20-10 after one quarter and 33-17 at halftime.  And while
defense is first and foremost on any Todd Blakeman-coached team, this year's group has some play-
making ability it will be showcasing as well.
"We're young, but we've got some potential to score," Blakeman stated.  "Right now, we're a little
loose on the offensive end, but we shot the 3 well tonight.  Michael did a nice job and Tyler had some
nice slashes to the basket.
"We've got some guards who can take the ball to the hole," he continued.  "We can do some things
better offensively, but we'll keep working at it."
The Titans had only three turnovers in the contest, and none at halftime.  The Tornadoes (0-5, 0-1)
have now lost 40 straight regular season CS8 games.
Greene finished with 23 points, while Thurston had 12 for Glenwood. Aaron Wenneborg added
seven points, followed by: Nick Fuchs (6), Raz Harris (6), T. J. Gates (2), Dalvin Thompson (2) and
Miles McAdams (1).  Kraig Heil hit four 3-point field goals and had 14 points to lead the Tornadoes.
•Greene hit two wing 3's and one from the corner in the first 3:30 of the game, but Taylorville's
Matthew Yard added two 3's of his own during that time.
Thurston had a conventional 3-point play and Fuchs added a basket to put GHS up 14-8, and a
rebound basket by Harris and a 3-ball by Thurston put Glenwood up 20-10 after one quarter.
The Titans stretched the lead to 16 at halftime, despite missing all five of their free throw attempts in
the second quarter.  A driving layup by Greene put GHS up 28-15, and later Wenneborg drained a 3
from the top of the key as he was fouled.  Harris added a basket with under a minute left for Glenwood.
Heil hit three 3's for the Tornadoes in the third quarter, but Taylorville committed eight fouls in the
period.  Glenwood hit 6-of-9 free throws and led 43-33 heading into the fourth.  Still, Taylorville
outrebounded GHS 10-3 in the quarter.
"Heil shot the ball pretty well, and we knew he could do that," Blakeman explained.  "He got off some
screens and hit some shots.  We'll fix that in practice.
"Defensively, we played a pretty good game," he added.  "We challenged them to get into the paint.
But the one thing I was disappointed in was our defensive rebounding."
In the fourth quarter, Fuchs drained a wing 3-ball, and later Greene hit a 3 and a layup to put
Glenwood up 51-35.  The lead stretched to 20 after two free throws from Thurston and a layup from
Thompson, off an assist from Fuchs.
Glenwood finished 19-of-45 from the field and 14-of-25 from the free throw line.  The Titans had 21
rebounds (Harris 5, Thurston 5, Gates 3, Turner 3, Greene 2, Wenneborg 2, Fuchs 1), three turnovers
and 12 fouls.
The Titans had seven 3-point field goals, including four from Greene, and one each by Fuchs,
Wenneborg and Thurston.  Greene had five steals for GHS.
Taylorville was 16-of-39 from the field and just 0-of-2 from the line.  The Tornadoes had seven 3-
point field goals, 22 rebounds, 19 turnovers and 22 fouls.
•Coming up, Glenwood travels to Lincoln (5-1, 1-0 CS8) Friday and Jerseyville Saturday.  The JV
game starts at 6 both nights, followed by the varsity.
