Titans

With more twists and turns than a best-selling drama, Friday's Glenwood-Lanphier boys basketball
game will go down in the annals as one of the wildest ever seen in these parts.
A commanding first half lead turned into a close game in the third quarter, and then the suspense of
last second shots, fouls and controversy ensued in the fourth quarter and overtime periods as the Lions
pulled out a 58-57, double overtime win in a Central State Eight contest in Chatham.
The maddening loss dropped the defending CS8 champion Titans (7-7) to 2-3 in league play.
Glenwood did recover quickly, however, dispatching of Peoria Woodruff 52-43 the next afternoon at the
Prairie Capital Convention Center (see related story).
Against Lanphier, GHS jumped out to a 23-13 halftime lead, dominating the interior and limiting the
Lions to one shot on most possessions. GHS held a 14-4 rebound advantage, and the Lions made just
5-of-21 field goals, while the Titans were 9-of-14 from the field.
Glenwood hit each of its first four shots in the first two quarters, taking a 12-4 lead early after two
layups by Noah Adams, a 3-pointer from Cody Traina and two free throws from Mitch Falter. Long
alley-oop passes and deft interior feeds were the norm in the first half.
A conventional 3-point play by Adams, who finished with a career-high 23 points, with 2:36 left in the
half gave Glenwood its largest lead at 23-11. Nine Titans' turnovers prevented the lead from being even
larger, however.
Things began to change in the third quarter, as Lanphier, led by Karl Madison (32 points, 25 coming
after halftime), surged on a 9-0 run to tie the score at 29-29 with 2:44 left. Two free throws from Adams
and a layup by Falter (Traina assist) put Glenwood up 33-29 after three periods.
"They got after us a little bit and it was physical on the perimeter," GHS head coach Todd Blakeman
stated. "We were very careless with the ball at times and gave them some easy buckets. We have to
continue to keep striving and making progress at being strong with the ball. We have to slow them down
when they speed us up. We sped up with them and it gave us problems."
Early in the fourth, GHS went up 37-29 after a reverse layup by Traina and layup by Falter, assists going
to Falter and Nick Fuchs. But Madison and the Lions took advantage of some missed free throws and
sloppy turnovers, closing to within 41-40 with 2:35 left after a conventional 3-point play by freshman Jalen
McBride, which followed eight straight Lanphier points from Madison.
Adams scored on a layup off a feed from Falter for a 43-40 GHS lead with two minutes to play, and
Madison responded with a 3-ball to tie the score 30 seconds later. With 45 seconds left, the Titans called
timeout and held for the last shot.
Traina was near the half-court line when he started his drive to the basket, but the senior point guard
was called for travelling with 3.7 seconds left as he put up a shot in the lane. A missed half court shot by
McBride sent the contest to overtime tied at 43-43.
"It's Cody's ball and he's gotta beat his man," Blakeman explained of the play called. "And he either
dishes it off or shoots it. I want the ball in his hands at that time. The travel was questionable, and at the
end of the first overtime, we got what we wanted and they got the foul call. The bottom line is we did what
we had to do to be there to win the ballgame."
In the first overtime, Adams hit a 3 and Traina two free throws to put Glenwood up 48-45 with 2:07 left,
before Madison tied the score with a free throw with 51 seconds left. Falter fouled out on the play, and
after Zack Zimmermann missed a 3 on the other end, Cheldon Brown was fouled and made one free
throw with 30 seconds left to give the Lions a 49-48 lead.
Following a Glenwood timeout, Adams hit a clutch turnaround jumper with 10 seconds left to give the
Titans a 50-49 lead. But the Lions were rescued when Madison plowed into three Glenwood defenders
near the basket, a foul being called on Willie Brooks with one second left. Madison missed the first but
made the second free throw to send the contest to a second OT.
The Titans' final lead of the contest came with 2:25 left in the second overtime after a driving layup from
Traina, giving GHS a 53-52 advantage. From there, Brown hit a basket and later a free throw to put
Lanphier up 55-53 with 1:03 left. That followed two consecutive Glenwood turnovers, with the Lions now
playing keep-away.
Another backcourt turnover by the Titans with 57 seconds to play gave them five turnovers in a
three-minute span, and Madison hit a free throw to put Lanphier up 56-53.
Following a missed 3 by Aaron Wenneborg, a Lions' turnover, and a missed jumper from Fuchs,
Brown was fouled with 20 seconds left and made one free throw to put the Lions up 57-53. Traina hit two
free throws with 15 seconds left, and it took Glenwood eight seconds to foul before Justin Smith stepped
to the line to make 1-of-2 free throws with 7.4 seconds to play, giving Lanphier a 58-55 lead.
Glenwood did get off a solid shot at the end, but Jared Turner's corner 3 was no good before
Wenneborg scored on a putback at the buzzer.
Adams led GHS with 23 points, while Falter had 17 and Traina 12. Brooks added three points and
Wenneborg two for the Titans. Madison led the Lions with 32 points, while McBride had 11 and Brown 10.
Glenwood made 20-of-32 field goals (63 percent), including two 3-point field goals, and 15-of-23 free
throws (65 percent). The Titans had 26 turnovers, 27 rebounds and 21 fouls.
The Lions were just 19-of-54 from the field (35 percent) and 17-of-26 from the line (65 percent).
Lanphier had only nine turnovers to go with 20 rebounds and 21 fouls.
"We're making strides, but we have a lot of room for improvement," Blakeman added. "We're getting a
lot more out of our post players now and our role players are starting to shine a little bit. We took some
positives out of Friday night and carried them over to Saturday's game."
