Titans trounce Raiders, charge into Sectionals

With an outfield fence as high as the "Green Monster" in Boston (well, close to it anyway) at Quincy
Notre Dame High School, it's safe to say that someone parking on the street beyond that fence would see
their vehicle being safe from flying projectiles from a baseball field nearby.
Well, not so fast.  Last Saturday, Glenwood's Ben Parks blasted a three-run homer over that fence and
onto the hood of an SUV as the Titans pasted the host Raiders 15-0 to claim the Class 3A QND Regional
title.
Tristan Molumby (9-0) pitched the first four innings and gained the victory on the mound, and the Titans
backed him up with 18 hits and two six-run innings.  The contest was shortened to five innings due to the
10-run rule.
Had the game been played using regular season rules, the Titans would have won in three innings,
since they held a 15-0 lead after three frames.
Glenwood scored six runs in the first and third innings, along with three runs in the second inning.
Molumby, while not at his sharpest, recorded his first five outs on strikeouts.  He struck out six and walked
three while allowing only one bloop single.  Bryce Sablotny finished up, allowing a double and getting a
strikeout.
"We've started out slow a lot this year, so it was nice to have that first inning," Glenwood head coach Pat
Moomey stated.  "I thought Parks' hit really topped it off.  They looked like they might get out of it with three
runs, but Parks' homer gave us breathing room."
"It was a two-strike pitch, and I was trying to shorten up and put it in play," Parks explained.  "I just got
lucky, hit it well and hit it hard."
As for the key to the Titans' offensive outburst, Parks added, "The last two practices we've been working
on shortening our swings and working on our two-strike approaches and putting the ball in play.  I think
that helped the team out today.  We had 18 hits and it showed."
•Molumby allowed the first two batters to reach base in the top of the first before striking out the side.  In
the bottom of the first, leadoff batter Derek Crouch turned a single into a double with his hustle off QND
starter Brandon Ley.
Jake Reese had an RBI single to left, and Jake Ingold, back from his one-game suspension, had an
infield hit to short.  Tim Sullivan walked to load the bases, and Molumby swatted a line drive double to the
leftfield wall to drive in two runs for a 3-0 lead.
After first baseman Ryan Williams struck out, Parks smacked his titanic blast to left and the Titans took
a 6-0 lead.  Jared Turner struck out with runners at second and third to end the first inning.
In the bottom of the second, Reese tripled to center and came home on a sac fly by Sullivan.  Molumby
reached on an error, one of several miscues made by the QND defense, and Williams had an RBI single
to right before Ley was removed for Tim Haley.  A wild pitch scored pinch-runner Chris Sekardi to make it
9-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, Reese doubled to right-center and Ingold sent an RBI double
down the left-field line.  Sullivan walked, and Molumby sent another two-run double to center, making it 12-
0.
Williams followed with a second RBI single to right, and Parks hit a high-arching double to the right-
field wall to make it 14-0.  Derek Piper closed the scoring with an RBI single to center.
•Molumby, who threw 55 pitches in the Titans' 11-1 victory over Southeast last Wednesday, threw about
75 pitches in four innings against QND (15-15).
"I'm not sure if he got into a groove but it was a good effort," Moomey stated.  "He looked strong, maybe
too strong.  Most of the time we let Reese and Molumby work together and they've done a good job all year
of getting in that rhythm and calling a good game."
The Titans (28-5) move on to the Class 3A Lincoln Sectional, where they were to take on Mahomet-
Seymour (18-10) Wednesday.  The sectional title game is set for Saturday, June 6, at 11 a.m.  Champaign
Centennial (19-13) and Lincoln (15-20) will play in the other semifinal Thursday.
Centennial defeated Glenwood  9-2 at the Decatur Sectional last year, scoring six runs in the first inning
off Trevor McGrath.
Moomey wasn't sure who he was going to start in Wednesday's game.
"I didn't think Tristan threw his best today, but he made pitches when he had to, which is the most
important thing.  He struggled a bit, and I'm not sure if it was coming back on two days rest or having too
much rest going in to the Southeast game.  I'm sure he's going to want to pitch, and we did it with Trevor
last year and he didn't have his best game and he had an extra day's rest."
Super-Sectionals will be held at GCS Park in Sauget Monday, June 8, at 5 p.m.
•The Titans defeated Southeast 11-1 in five innings in their regional opener last week in Quincy.
Molumby pitched four innings and allowed two hits, striking out seven and walking one.  Glenwood had
10 hits and scored eight runs in the third inning, while Southeast committed five errors.  Sablotny finished
up, allowing a run on three hits while striking out two.
Reese, who had three hits on the day, had a double and two-run homer in the third.  Turner and Piper
added two-run singles and Williams had two hits and a run scored for Glenwood.
