SHG hands Titans first loss of season
  Sacred Heart-Griffin used a seven-run second inning to take a 7-2 lead, then the Cyclones held off
Glenwood for a 7-6 victory in Central State Eight Conference baseball action Tuesday at Lanphier Park.
  The loss was the first of the season for the Titans, who stand at 10-1 overall, 2-1 in the CS8.  SHG
improved to 10-3 and 5-0 with the win.
  The Titans outhit SHG 11-6 but saw a late rally fall just short in the seventh inning.  Alex Pfeiffer had four
hits for Glenwood, including three doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.  Trevor McGrath, Jake Ingold and
Jacob Reese each had two hits for the Titans, while Derek Waggener had one.  McGrath had a triple and
Reese a double for GHS.
  McGrath (3-1) pitched all but one-third of an inning and took the loss, though only one of the runs he
allowed ended up being earned.  He struck out eight, walked three and allowed six hits.  Tristan Molumby
finished up for Glenwood, escaping a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth.
  Tom Newell (3-1) pitched five innings to gain the victory for SHG, while Tyler Ely finished up.  The
Cyclones had four hits, two walks, a hit batter and an error in their seven-run second inning.  Included was
a controversial call on a ball hit by Tommy Jennings down the left field line that was ruled a triple and
scored two runs.
  •In other action last week, Glenwood swept a doubleheader from East Peoria, 6-5 and 13-3, and
defeated Springfield High 7-1.
  Against EP, the Titans won the opener 6-5.  Waggener started and pitched four innings, allowing four
hits and a walk while striking out five.  Tim Sullivan (2-0) relieved and pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing one
run on three hits before Ingold came on for his fourth save of the season.
  Reese smacked a two-run homer in the first inning for Glenwood, and catcher Kyle Krager walked and
scored on a fielder's choice by David Kaufmann in the third. McGrath doubled and scored in the fourth,
while Waggener doubled and scored on an RBI single by Kaufmann in the fifth.  K.C. Hearn added what
proved to be the game-winning hit, an RBI single to score Kaufmann in the fifth.
  In the second game, Ben Parks (2-0) pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing three runs on eight
hits.  He struck out one and walked none and allowed one home run.
At the plate, Waggener smoked a grand slam to right during the second inning.  Molumby finished off the
eight-run frame with his first hit of the season, a solo homer to right.  Molumby added a walk and scored
three runs on the day.
  The Titans added a single run in the third, on an RBI single by Jared Turner, and four more in the fourth,
as Hearn had a two-run single.  Hearn ended up with two hits, two  RBIs and three runs scored in the
contest.
  •Against Springfield, Mc-Grath pitched 6 1/3 innings to gain the victory.  He allowed only three singles
and an unearned run while striking out six and walking four.  Ingold finished up, retiring the final two
batters.
  At the plate, the Titans scored one run in the third and six in the sixth.  Pfeiffer walked and scored on a
wild pitch in the third, while in the sixth, Parks had a two-run single to right, followed by a two-run homer to
left by Turner.  Reese later added an RBI single.  Glenwood finished with seven hits and one error in the
game.
