Homecoming King and Queen
Friday night.
At Monday night’s Board of Education
meeting, Carrie VanAlstine (left) was hired as
the successor to retiring Supt. Bob Gillum.  
They participated in a “passing of the baton”
ceremony as board members (l-r) Alan
Harling, Rick Petermeyer, Steve Copp and
John Kwedar look on.
The Village of Chatham dedicated a memorial
bench to the family of Army Cpl. Chad Young
during a ceremony in Westside Park on
Memorial Day.  Young’s parents, Jerry and
Brett, are pictured.  The Chatham Jaycees and
Chatham Kiwanis contributed to making the
bench a reality.  Cpl. Young was killed in
active duty in Afghanistan Nov. 3, 2010.  He
was a 2003 Glenwood High School graduate.
The Chatham American Legion Homecoming
Parade was held last Saturday afternoon
through the streets of Old Chatham.  Grand
Marshals for the parade were the 50-plus year
members of Legion Post 759.  They include
James Logan and Bill Gaule (pictured at top),
along with Glenn Alexander, Walter Bliefnick,
Earl Campbell, John Haines, Garland Kingery,
Steve Markus and George Roberts.  The
Grand Marshal float also earned Best in Show
honors.  The Best Set of Wheels award went
to Cinda Edwards (bottom).
Connor Etheridge won the Men’s
Division title at Saturday’s Cow Chip
Throw event with a toss of 161 feet,
beating his dad, Steve, who took
second at 146.  Shane Reynolds
was third with a throw of 130 feet.
Kirsten Aydt was crowned as the 2012 Miss
Chatham Sweet Corn Queen during
ceremonies held last Friday night at the Sweet
Corn Festival.  She was crowned by 2011
Queen Bethany Williams, with Pageant
Co-Director Ashley Lynch assisting.  Lauren
Folkerts (left) was named as first runner-up,
while Christina Thomas (right) was second
runner-up.
