going away, and the Ball-Chatham Board of Education heard
first-hand how widespread the problems are at Monday's

Mitch Noll received the Chris
Hughes Memorial Award prior to
Friday's home football game
with Lincoln. Presenting the
award was Glenwood head
coach Dan Rourke. The award
is given to a varsity football
player who exhibits the following
criteria: courage and
determination, academic
achievement, pride in self and
school, consideration of others,
service to school and
community, loyalty and love of
life.
RECORD SETTER! - Glenwood
High School senior Hannah
Werth has broken two IHSA
state records in the past week.
Werth continues to add to her
all-time volleyball kills record,
which stands at 1,837 after
Tuesday's win over SHG. The
old record was 1,697, set in
2007 by Allison McGlaughlin of
Morton. Werth had 17 kills in the
second game against SHG
Tuesday, setting a state
single-game kill record. In
addition, Werth was named MVP
of the Titan Invite last Saturday,
recording 81 kills, 40 service
points, five aces, 38 digs and 28
assists in five Glenwood
victories.

School girls cross country team captured the
IESA Class AA Rochester Sectional title last

up for election on
Chatham Village Board

There will be several positions up for election in the
spring of 2009 on the Chatham Village Board. (more)
Four seats open on
Ball-Chatham Board

The Ball-Chatham Community School District #5 has
announced that in preparation for the April 7, 2009 election
that includes local school boards, there are four (4) seats
on the Ball-Chatham School District #5 Board of Education
to be filled. (more)

Local senior citizens, in coordination with the
Chatham Daily Bread Program, were busy
filling bags of candy for children in the
Ball-Chatham School District Monday morning
as part of the Chatham Police Department's
K-3 Halloween Safety program. Officers Vern
Foli and John Holm of the CPD helped
coordinate the effort, along with officer Dave
Drabing. Every year local seniors help to fill
the Halloween bags, which will be distributed
by Foli and Drabing to Ball and Chatham
Elementary School children this week. Both
officers will talk to kids about Halloween
safety. "We appreciate the seniors helping us
do this," Holm stated. "Without them, we
wouldn't be able to have this program."
Gray to seek third term;
Hartzler planning not to
Village of Chatham Mayor Tom Gray said Tuesday (Oct. 28)
night he's planning to run for re-election in the spring and
will seek a third four-year term in office. Gray began his
tenure in 2001. Trustees Mike McGrath, Chuck Herr and
Joe Schatteman are all also planning to run for re-election,
as is Clerk Pat Schad. The filing period for the village
positions is Dec. 8-15, 2008, for the April 7, 2009 election.
Citizens interested in running for any of the aforementioned
political offices can pick up nominating materials at the
village office.
•There are four seats up for election in the spring on the
Ball-Chatham School Board. Joe Hartzler, a two-term
member, indicated Monday he's not planning on seeking re-
election, while Board President Patrick Hansen said he's
"seriously considering" running again.Rick Carr, the longest
tenured board member (three terms), and Kathy Lundin
each indicated they were undecided at this point. The filing
period for the school board election is Jan. 20-26, 2009.
Village board reverses course, approves Avenel

Two weeks after shooting down the proposed Avenel Subdivision, the Chatham Village Board approved, by
a 5-0-1 vote, the preliminary plan for Avenel at Tuesday's meeting. (more)
