Water main along frontage
road breaks again
Another water main break along the main line coming
into Chatham near the I-55 frontage road occurred this
past Saturday morning.  This break happened about 30
feet north of the last one that happened on Aug. 23, also
on a Saturday morning.  That break forced a number of
local residents to be without water for a period of time
and put into effect a 3-day boil order. The latest break,
which occurred around 7 a.m. this past Saturday, only
affected a handful of nearby residents.  However, runoff
from the break did leave a lot of standing water on some
nearby properties.  About six to eight nearby residences
were under a boil order after the break, according to Del
McCord, Village of Chatham, Director of Utilities and
Administration.  Most Chatham customers were not
affected, since water pressure  was able to be kept up to
acceptable levels, McCord added. This break again
involved a 7-foot crack along the pipe bottom.  The pipe in
question is about 30 years old, and will not be needed
once the Village's Water Plant project comes online.
Should the breaks continue to happen, alternatives may
have to be considered. Crews have been investigating
the possible cause of the breaks, and McCord said the
problem may involve a soil content issue.  The breaks
that are occurring are not the normal winter-type cracks
that occur with the freezing and un-freezing during the
winter months. Crews were on-site for nearly nine hours
as repairs lasted into the evening hours on Saturday.
•The Chatham area received four to five inches of rain
this past weekend, mostly on early Sunday morning, as
the remnants of Hurricane Ike rolled through.  Though
many fields, backyards and basements were flooded,
there were no major flooding issues reported in the
village as of Monday morning, McCord added.
Traffic signals at the Walnut/Park intersection
in Chatham were turned on this past Monday
morning.  The intersection now includes left
turn lanes in all directions.  The $1.2 million
project was paid for with a combination of
state, federal and local funds, with the Village
of Chatham picking up 10 percent of the cost
and state and federal safety funds paying for
the rest.
