Water plant project takes positive step forward

Boil order lifted

 A 9-foot break in a water main near the I-55 frontage
road this past Saturday morning spawned a boil order
that lasted to late Tuesday morning for Village of
Chatham water customers. (

Gillum: Space crunch puts
referendum on fast track

 Enrollment is up in the Ball-Chatham School District,
most buildings are out or close to being out of classroom
space and there is nowhere to put any future student
growth without displacement or modular buildings being

LOCAL SOLDIER HONORED - Chief Warrant
Officer Darin Anderson of Chatham was
honored at a recent Chicago Bears
preseason game against the Kansas City
Chiefs at Soldier Field.  Anderson
represented all of the U.S. Armed Forces as
he was recognized for his accomplishments
as a member of the Illinois Army National
Guard.  He is pictured with Bears player
Jason McKie, who purchased four tickets for
Anderson and his family to attend the game.  
Anderson was recognized during the third
quarter of the game and shown on the
JumboTron as fans and players stood and
applauded.  Anderson, a member of the
Illinois Army National Guard since 1995, was
one of seven members of Detachment 36,
Operational Support Airlift in Decatur
mobilized from April to November 2007 in
support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He flew
110 air combat missions, 610 combat flight
hours and also served as the unit's Aviation
Safety Officer, Instructor Pilot, Supply Officer,
Administrative Officer and Assistant
Operations Officer.  Following the unit's
deployment he was awarded a Bronze Star,
Air Medal and Combat Action Badge.  
Anderson, a life-long Bears fan, attended the
game with his wife, Christine, and daughters
Aubrey and Savannah.
Lock your doors!
 A recent rash of car burglaries in Chatham has
prompted a reminder from Chatham Police Chief Roy
Barnett for residents to lock their car doors when not in
their vehicles. Barnett added that all of the recent
incidents involved unlocked cars.  A number of items
have been stolen, including a laptop computer.

Intersection work close
to completion

 The finishing touches are currently being applied to the
work at the Walnut/Park intersection in Chatham, with
final completion only a week or two away. (

New firefighters begin
duties soon
 The Chatham Fire Protection District is in the process of
adding five full-time firefighters, with three new volunteer
firefighters also being added. The five new full-time hires
will bring the full-time staff to 17.  The three new volunteer
firefighters that have been hired are Scott Snider, Tom
Wilson and Kyle Enstrom. The new hires will allow for
five full-time staff members to be on duty each shift, with
Assistant Chief Bruce Osborne shifting to days with  
Chief Phil Schumer. The new full-time hires are expected
to begin a three-week training period Sept. 22 before
starting regular duties Oct. 11.
 •In other news, Steve Sullivan has agreed to remain on
the Fire District Board of Trustees, at least through the
end of his current term (May 31, 2009).  He and Gerald
Hughes are currently serving on the board. The one open
position is expected to be filled by the Sangamon County
Board soon, and the person who is nominated probably
will be voted on officially at the County Board's Oct. 14
meeting.
Werth named MVP of AAU
National Tournament
 Hannah Werth, an incoming senior at Glenwood High School,
has been named as the Most Valuable Player of the 36-team
AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships 17-under Open
Division. Werth, competing for the Illini Elite 17 Cardinal club
team, helped lead her team to the national title in the 17-under
Open Division.  The tournament was held last week in
Orlando, FL. Werth's team defeated the Asics KIVA 17 Red
squad 25-21, 25-23 in the title match.
A total of 14 girls were named as All-Americans at the tourney,
with Werth selected as the MVP of the squad.  Teammates
Kelsey Heckelman and Allison Kirk of Illini Elite were also
named to the All-American team. The 35th AAU Girls Junior
National Volleyball Championships were held June 11-19 at
Disney's Wide World of Sports and the Orange County
Convention Center in Orlando.

Starter Madison Bandy pitched out of some early trouble,
and the Glenwood bats came alive later on as the Titan
softball girls claimed a 9-2 decision over Rochester in
the title game of the IESA Class AA Chatham Regional
Tuesday at GIS. (
