Sweetcorn Festival
enjoys huge crowds
By Joe Pritchett
Clarion Editor
Despite some oppressive heat and humidity, there
were huge crowds at this year's Chatham Jaycees'
Sweetcorn Festival, held last weekend at Community
Park.
Over 13,600 ears of sweet corn were ordered, and
almost all were consumed, according to Steve O'Dell,
Co-Chairman of this year's event.
"We only had about a couple hundred left over," he
stated.  "I thought everything went very well overall.
Considering the heat, we had a great turnout.  It was
just a sea of people on Saturday night."
Last year, festival organizers ordered 11,000 ears of
sweet corn, but ran out on Saturday night.
Final numbers are not yet in, but early indications are
very positive this year.  Crowds jammed the main food
tent on both Friday and Saturday, and an LPGA private
party on Saturday night brought in additional people.
O'Dell said volunteers turned out in record numbers,
and last Thursday's corn schucking was completed in
three hours due to such an impressive turnout.
There are 150 volunteers who worked at the
Sweetcorn Festival this year.  (From July 24, 2008
edition).

Bryant, Rittenhouse
repeat as National Diving
champions
Kelci Bryant of Chatham and partner Ariel Rittenhouse
repeated as champions in the 3-meter springboard
synchronized diving competition at last weekend's Kaiser
Permanente National Diving Championships held in
Pasadena, California. The duo, who will compete at the
Beijing Olympic Games in the same event on Aug. 10,
finished with 308.1 points to claim this year's national
title.    Runners-up were Christina Loukas and Amanda
Miller, who had 298.2 points. Bryant and Rittenhouse
qualified for the Olympics earlier this month after their
strong showing at a five-day selection camp held in
Knoxville, Tennessee.  The Olympics are set to begin on
Aug. 8, and the 3-meter synchro diving finals are set for
Aug. 10.
The former dilapidated building located
directly behind A. J.'s Corner in Chatham has
been razed, and a new 2,000 square foot
structure is currently being built.  The property,
owned by George Gillette of Chatham, will
soon be home to a veterinary clinic.
Bryant, Rittenhouse just miss Olympic medal
Chatham's Kelci Bryant just missed earning a medal at the Beijing Olympic Games, as she and partner
Ariel Rittenhouse finished fourth in the finals of the women's 3-meter synchronized diving competition held
this past weekend. After the event, Bryant, 19, and Rittenhouse, 17, were already pointing to coming back at
the 2012 Olympic Games, which will be held in London, England. In Beijing, China's Guo Jingjing and Wu
Minxia took the Gold with 343.5 points, while Russia's Julia Pakhalina and Anastasia Pozdnyakova took the
Silver Medal with 323.61 points. The Bronze Medal came down to the U.S. duo and the team from Germany
of Heike Fischer and Ditte Kotzian.  The two teams came into their final dives tied for third place.
The German duo went first, scoring 76.5 points on a reverse 2 1/2 pike.  Bryant and Rittenhouse then
scored 72 points on a back 2 1/2 pike, giving the Germans the Bronze.    The Germans finished with a total
of 318.9 points, to 314.4 for Bryant and Rittenhouse. Still, Bryant and Rittenhouse earned the best-ever
Olympic finish for the United States in this event.  And, the duo took a Bronze Medal at the World Cup in
Beijing this past spring at the same location.
Bryant is the daughter of Randy and Kathie Bryant of Chatham.

stolen bases.  McGrath's 66 hits tied both the GHS and Central State Eight season records. McGrath, the
Titans' No. 1 pitcher, finished 9-2 with a 1.37 ERA on the mound.  In 66.1 innings pitched, he struck out 82
and walked 16.
Bryant still alive for berth in Olympic Games
Chatham native Kelci Bryant remains in the hunt for an Olympic berth in women's 3-meter springboard
diving after the completion of the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials last week in Indianapolis. The winner of the
competition, Christina Loukas, automatically qualifies for the  2008 Olympics in Beijing later this summer.
The next five placers - Nancilea Foster, Allison Brennan, Ariel Rittenhouse, Bryant and Tory Ishimatsu, are
all invited to the Selection Camp in Knoxville, TN, July 2-6, where the second U. S. Olympic spot will be
determined. Bryant jumped from eighth place to fifth in the 3-meter springboard competition this past
Saturday. Also, Bryant still has a chance to qualify for the Olympics in the synchronized 3-meter diving
event.  Her partner is Rittenhouse.  Those berths will also be determined at the Knoxville Selection Camp.
