Construction on the widening of the Polecat
Creek bridge on Route 4 in Chatham has
begun. The $3.75 million project from IDOT
will include widening the bridge to five lanes.
When that is completed, Route 4 will be
resurfaced from there to the south edge of
town. Work will continue through the winter
months, and two lanes on the bridge are
expected to remain open during construction,
though Village officials said there will be
selected periods of one lane with flaggers
during the day. Completion of the entire
project is expected in the Fall of 2011. Also,
the north entrance from Cottonwood onto
Route 4 will be closed for a good portion of
the project. Motorists in that area will have to
use the southern Cottonwood exit (traffic
signals) to Route 4. School buses will have
a turnaround area and the school district is
aware of the situation, Village officials added.
