Dodson to be appointed Interim Chief
Sgt. Jim Dodson, a 32-year veteran of the Chatham Police Department, will be appointed Interim Police Chief when
Roy Barnett officially retires as of May 1, 2009. Dodson told the Clarion Tuesday he is not interested in being the next
Chief. He has plans to retire in the near future.
"I told them I would cover things and be the chief for as long as they wanted until they found the right person," Dodson
said.
"We're not going to rush this and hire a chief on the spur of the moment," Mayor Tom Gray said. "It's been so long
since we've done this, and we're going to conduct a professional selection process."
Gray added that the village has employed a company to look into its personnel practices, and they will also help the
village develop an interview and selection process for the next chief. He anticipated it could take as long as three
months to make a formal recommendation. Gray has the power to appoint the Police Chief, though it must be
approved by a majority of the Village Board. Barnett has served as Chatham's Police Chief since Feb. 1, 1988. (From
