Kelsey Sowards, 19, of
Chatham has advanced as
one of the final four
contestants in the WIBI
Opening Act vocalist
competition.  A competition
that began with 400-plus
contestants is down to four
semifinalists, all of whom will
record a professional demo
in Nashville.  Their songs will
be played on WIBI and online
voting will determine the
winner.  The winning
contestant will be revealed on
stage Sunday, April 19, at the
Jeremy Camp and MercyMe
concert at the Prairie Capital
Convention Center.  The
winner will then get to
perform as the "opening act"
at the concert, which is
scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.  
In addition, the winning
performer will be featured on
"The Heart of Worship" and
have a talent review with INO

for past due electricity bill

Chatham in excess of $13,800.  She does not have the means to
pay it, and she faced the prospect of having her power shut off
this week. (

B-C School District purchases 145
acres; price tag $3.6 million

from Fred and Eleanor Frank at a special board meeting last Wednesday night.

Carter, referendum group await
public vote next week

It's been a whirlwind couple of months for Linda Carter and her 'Building For Their
Future' committee, which was charged with educating the public on the space
needs of the Ball-Chatham School District and getting out the message to vote
"Yes" on the referendum issue that will be before the voters next week. (

several contested local races, along with a few that are

The Chatham Area Public Library has
undergone major renovations the last two
years, as a huge crowd of 350 people turned
out for the Dedication and Grand Re-Opening
ceremonies April 5.

referendum; board
incumbents ousted
Local voters gave a resounding "Yes" vote to a referendum that
will build a new elementary school in Chatham Tuesday night.

The Ball-Chatham School District has
purchased 145 acres of land adjacent to
Glenwood High School.  The price tag was
$3.6 million, or $25,000 per acre.  The land
borders Iron Bridge Road to the east and
heads north to the railroad tracks and south
to near, but not adjacent to, Plummer.  The
school board voted 6-1 to approve the
purchase last week.  The land was
purchased from Fred and Eleanor Frank.

trustee race
Two-term Chatham Village Trustee Mike McGrath was ousted in
an exceptionally tight race for three seats on the Chatham Village
Board in Tuesday's election. (

Chatham recently and presented a check to
the Chatham Fire Protection District for
$53,086 as part of a federal grant program.

money for Gordon Drive project

The Village of Chatham will be receiving federal stimulus money for a
proposed project on Gordon Drive after all, though about $1 million will still be
needed to finish the scope of the work. (

Police Chief Roy Barnett is
calling it a career after serving
21-plus years in the Village of
Chatham.  Barnett officially
retires April 30.  He has served
as Police Chief since Feb. 1,
1988.

JIM BOYD AWARD - GHS senior Mitch
Falter was named the 2009 recipient of the
Jim Boyd Award last Saturday during
Senior Night ceremonies.  The award is
named for a Glenwood student who died of
leukemia in the 1970s.  The award,
presented by AD Dan Rourke, is given to
the varsity boys basketball player who best
exemplifies courage and determination,
academic achievement, pride in self and
school, consideration of others, service to
school and community, loyalty and love of
life.  Falter is the son of Mike and Lesa
Falter of Springfield.
Titans shake off slow start,
surge past EP on Sr. Night

play from Mitch Falter and Noah Adams propelled the Glenwood
Titans past East Peoria 61-53 on Senior Night Saturday at GHS.

Saturday's IHSA Springfield Swimming and Diving Sectional,

The Glenwood High School Hall of Fame Class of 2009 has been
announced, and this year's banquet is set for Sunday, April 26, at
noon at Glenwood High School. (
