Board okays referendum for new elementary
school

Voters in the Ball-Chatham School District will decide this spring whether or not to grant permission for a new
500-student elementary school to be built. The facility and its furnishings would be paid for entirely through

Chatham, New Berlin form Water Commission

Chatham Area Public Library is nearly
complete. The $3.5 million project doubled
the size of the building to nearly 29,000

Mayor: 'We need real numbers and details' concerning
CWLP offer

The City of Springfield and City, Water Light and Power (CWLP) have made an offer to the Village of Chatham to
try and keep the village as a future water customer. (more)
Deborah Lakamp named Chamber Director
The Chatham Area Chamber of Commerce has announced Deborah Lakamp, CAE, as its new Executive
Director. Lakamp brings 20 years of non-profit management experience to the position. She most recently
served as the Director of Member Services for the Fraternal Order of Police, Illinois State Lodge and has
experience with non-profits in the agriculture, social services and business sectors. In addition, Lakamp is a
Certified Association Executive (CAE), which is a designation earned from the American Society of Association
Executives after experience, reading, classroom and testing requirements have been met.
“Lakamp is an outgoing individual who can bring membership, event planning, communications, management
and other skill sets to the chamber,” said Chamber President Kim DuVall, branch manager of Marine Bank.
“She will be meeting with members and working with Chamber committees to implement the chamber’s
business plan and initiatives.”
Lakamp is a graduate of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, The Dale Carnegie Effective
Communications and Human Relations Training and The Grantsmanship Center. She is a member of the
Illinois Society of Association Executives and a licensed real estate salesperson with Perfect Address Referral.
The Chatham Area Chamber of Commerce is comprised of 163 local businesses that support and advance the
business and economic climate of the community.

Gill, relay teams shine at CS8
Junior Sam Gill set school and conference records in the 50 yard freestyle and was also part of two winning
relay teams as the Glenwood boys swimming team placed third at the Central State Eight Conference meet last
week at Eisenhower Pool. (more)
Legion, Sweetcorn dates set
The Chatham Village Board held a short meeting Feb. 10 at
Municipal Hall, with Mayor Tom Gray and all trustees except Tom
Kavanagh in attendance.
•Dates for this summer's Chatham American Legion
Homecoming and Chatham Jaycees Sweetcorn Festival have
been set. Homecoming will be held June 25-27, 2009, on the
Village Square, and Sweetcorn will be July 17-18 at Community
Park.
•Also, the board heard from Steve Etheridge of the Jaycees, who
informed the board of a state grant the organization has received
for upgrades at Jaycee Park. Work will include adding
playground equipment and lighting at the basketball courts, along
with some other smaller items. Etheridge added that the Jaycees
are looking at putting some netting underneath the stage at
Community Park to help keep birds and pests out.
•Village committee meetings will be held Tuesday, Feb. 17,
beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Perkins appointed to CFPD
Board of Trustees
George Perkins has been appointed by the Sangamon County Board to
serve on the Chatham Fire Protection District's Board of Trustees. (more)
A water main break Feb. 22 at the Route
4/Spruce intersection in Chatham lasted into
Monday afternoon, with a boil order being
issued for Circle Drive, Bucks Drive and
South Main from Spruce to Goldenrod.
Residents in the area were without water for
nearly six hours on Monday morning, as
crews were forced to get a line stop
performed in order to fix the break. Crews
were originally called to the scene around
8:30 p.m. Sunday and work continued into
Monday afternoon.
District officials continue
search for elementary
school location

Ball-Chatham School District officials are continuing their search
for a location for the proposed new elementary school, with four
potential sites being identified. (more)
BCEA candidate forum
March 30
The Ball-Chatham Education Association (BCEA) will host a
Candidate Forum Monday, March 30, at 7 p.m. at the Glenwood
High School Auditorium. Candidates for the Ball-Chatham Board
of Education will participate. They include Patrick Hansen, Rick
Carr, John Kwedar, Lisa Weitzel, Linda Carter and Alan Harling.
Election Day is April 7. A personal meet-and-greet and
refreshments will follow the forum in the Commons area.
