Village establishes
web-based alert system
The Village of Chatham has established a free, web-based
alert system that will instantly notify residents of warnings or
emergencies via e-mail or text message to their cell phone.
Residents can sign up for the "e-Lert" system at the Village's
website, www.chathamil.net/elerts. Participants will be
instantly notified of warnings related to events such as severe
storms or tornadoes, snow emergencies, water boil orders,
Amber Alerts, major street closings or other emergencies.
There is no charge to sign-up for this system.  Alerts will be
sent by text message or e-mail, or another option will allow
residents to receive notices on their computer monitors that
resemble alert notices that appear at the bottom of television
screens during weather emergencies. The system was built
by Ken Davis of Chatham, who owns Kennected Software.
Sales tax referendum in '09
not likely
With the Springfield District 186 school board not taking action
on the proposed sales tax increase to benefit Sangamon
County schools Monday night, the issue will more than likely
not be placed on the April 2009 ballot for local voters to
consider. (

Santa Claus arrived in style in Chatham
recently, as an Amtrak train from Springfield
made a special stop at the Chatham
Railroad Museum, formerly the Chatham
Depot.  Despite the bitter cold temperatures,
hundreds gathered for the occasion, with
over 125 children staying and visiting with
Santa as part of the Railroad Museum's
program for that day.  People were lined up
around the museum for several hours
waiting their turn with Santa.
A water main break at the Route 4/Mulberry
intersection Dec. 6 forced traffic to be
re-routed along Route 4 through town for
most of the day.  However, despite the break,
there were no water shutdowns or boil
orders issued in Chatham, as village crews
fixed the break "hot", with no valve
shutdowns.  Village Director Del McCord
explained that there was a six-inch break,
with crews called out about 7 a.m. Sunday.
Getting to the break, which was eventually
located inside of a culvert beneath Route 4,
was difficult for village workers, who had to
dig through concrete and brick located
underneath the top layer of asphalt.  Crews
were on-site until about 9 p.m.
Gray to run unopposed for third term as Mayor
Tom Gray will be running unopposed this coming spring for his third term as Mayor (Village President) of the
Village of Chatham.   Gray was first elected Mayor in 2001, taking over for Linda Koester.  He will be elected to
his third term at the April 7, 2009, election. Incumbent Village Clerk Pat Schad will also be running unopposed
on the April ballot.  Three incumbent trustees - Joe Schatteman, Chuck Herr and Mike McGrath - are also running
for re-election to the Village Board, and they will be joined by challenger Matt Mau.  Those four will be competing
for three trustee positions on the Chatham Village Board. Village elections are non-partisan, and all positions up
for election carry four-year terms.
School board to fill position
Ball-Chatham Board of Education Vice President Matt Keppler
has resigned from the board, effective Dec. 22, 2008.  He is
relocating  with his family to Nashville, Tennessee, for a new
job opportunity. The school board is now in the process of
finding a replacement for Keppler.  His position on the school
board runs through April 2011, and the board plans to appoint
a replacement to finish out that term.  The board has 45 days
to do so from Keppler's date of resignation, or the task falls on
the County Regional Office of Education. Interested applicants
must reside in Ball congressional township (where Keppler
was from), and are encouraged to submit a formal letter of
inquiry to the Ball-Chatham District Office.  The school board
will be conducting interviews of interested candidates on Jan.
12, 2009. Questions can be directed to Superintendent Bob
Gillum or board president Patrick Hansen.  Persons
submitting a letter of inquiry will receive a brief questionnaire
and bio sheet to fill out and return.  Gillum said that there are
three known candidates interested in the position as of
Tuesday.
Trivia Night for school referendum Jan. 17
A Ball-Chatham School District Action Team will be hosting a Trivia Night Jan. 17, 2009, in order to raise funds

local voters. The "Building for Their Future Trivia Night" will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Knights of Columbus
Hall at 141 N. Lakewood Drive, on Lake Springfield.  Doors open at 6 p.m., and the event begins at 7. A cash bar

Chatham Food Pantry
new leadership in place
The Chatham Food Pantry has assumed new
leadership personnel as of Jan. 1, 2009. Former
co-chairs Carolyn Whitney and Shelley Tripp have retired,
with Michelle Wiseman taking over as administrator.
Victoria Wilson will serve as client coordinator, with
Rinda Osborn and Don Stephens also taking on
leadership roles. The Chatham Food Pantry is currently
housed at Chatham Presbyterian Church.  Wiseman
explained that the Pantry typically serves between
300-400 people per year, but there is an anticipation of
an increase in requests this year. The Food Pantry
serves residents in the Ball-Chatham School District on
an emergency basis only.  There are a number of
non-perishable items in stock, and donations are always
accepted. Monetary donations are needed as well, as
Wiseman explained that perishable food items also
need to be purchased.  To make a donation or for more
