decide direction
of spring
referendum

The Ball-Chatham Board of Education
has chosen to let community feedback
be its basis for selecting whether to
build a new elementary school or middle
school as part of the planned spring
2009 referendum. (more)
THEN...AND NOW - Well, at least the photo on the right was taken
on Oct. 27, and of course gas prices shot up 24 cents the next day to
$2.19, but the increase pales in comparison to what prices looked
like on July 1 (left) earlier this year in Chatham, when they reached
all-time highs. After enduring some of the highest prices in the state
(outside of Cook County) for several months, the Springfield area
has enjoyed some of the lowest prices in the entire region lately, the
cheapest being $1.95 in Chatham so far.
Veterans Day Services Nov. 11
Chatham VFW Post 4763 will conduct Veterans Day Services
in Chatham Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. on the Village
Square. Scheduled speakers include Mayor Tom Gray,
Chatham American Legion Post 759 Commander Pat Schad,
VFW Post 4763 Commander Lee Morgan, Father John Nolan
of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and representatives from the
Chatham Police Department and Chatham Fire Department.
Paula Staab Polk will be presenting Presidential Citations. In
case of inclement weather, the service will be held indoors at
the American Legion Hall on the southwest corner of the
Square.
Leaf Bag Pick-Up Program
underway
The Village of Chatham's annual Leaf Bag Pick-Up Program is
currently underway through Dec. 1. Residents are asked to
bag their leaves and put them curbside by 7 a.m. each Monday
morning for pick-up that week. Bags can be picked up at the
Village Utility Office and Police Department; please be
prepared to show identification to pick up the bags, which are
free to Chatham residents. Lake Area Disposal is handling
the leaf bag pick-up this year.
Voter turnout
nears 80 percent
Voter turnout hit historic levels for
Tuesday's general election, with some
local precincts reporting over 80 percent
turnout and all being above 70. (more)
Veterans Day ceremonies were held Tuesday
morning at the Chatham American Legion
Hall, due to inclement weather outside.
Speakers included Chatham American
Legion Post 759 Commander Pat Schad (at
podium), along with Chatham Mayor Tom
Gray, Father John Nolan of St. Joseph's, CPD
officer Dave Drabing and VFW Post 4763
Commander Lee Morgan.
Chatham Library to be
closed Nov. 21-22
The Chatham Area Public Library will be closed Friday and
Saturday, November 21-22, to move shelving and furniture into
the remodeled portion of the Library. The Library will reopen on
Monday, Nov. 24. Any volunteers wishing to help with this
move may call Susie Fairfield at the Library, 483-2713. With
this move, two-thirds of the Library addition/renovation project
will be completed. The final phase will be the remodeling of
the staff areas, the new Bahlow Conference Room and Opal
Lee Chatham History/ Genealogy Room. The project is
expected to be complete in January 2009.
Chatham Elementary School hosted its
second annual Veterans Day of
Remembrance Monday. A number of local
active retired or service personnel were
invited, with Dr. Curtis Floyd, grandfather of
student Abbey Floyd, speaking to third grade
students.

Glenwood High School senior Hannah Werth
was presented with a plaque by head coach
Larry Sample on Tuesday night
commemorating her breaking the state record
for career volleyball kills at the Lanphier match
recently. Werth continues to add to her state
record with each match, and she also now
shares the state record for kills in a game with
17.

win 3rd straight CS8
title

The Glenwood High girls volleyball team
concluded a festive and emotional Senior
Night with a convincing two-game victory over
Lincoln to clinch the program's third
consecutive Central State Eight Conference
title Tuesday night. (more)
GMS girls repeat as
cross country state
champions
For the second consecutive year, the
Glenwood Middle School girls cross country
team has brought home the first place trophy
from the IESA Class AA state cross country

Underdog Titans look
to take down SHG
'dynasty'

There really wasn't much of a surprise
when the Class 6A pairings came out last
Saturday night, as for the third time in the
last six seasons, Glenwood will meet SHG
in the football playoffs. (more)
CONFERENCE CHAMPS! - Members of the
Glenwood High School girls swimming team
captured Central State Eight Conference titles
in four events last week's CS8 meet. The 400
yard freestyle relay team of (l-r): Lindsey
Rayhill, Katie McEvoy, Lauren Mueller and
Haley Lanser claimed the conference title,
and Rayhill won two individual titles and
Lanser had one. GHS finished second overall
as a team for the second straight year.
Kiwanis sponsors Giving
Tree program
The annual Giving Tree for children in the Ball-Chatham
School District is being sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of
Chatham. Sixty-six children and 28 families are participating
in the Giving Tree program this year. Children will not be
identified, but cards with clothing sizes, age and gender are
now available at United Community Bank, 301 N. Main,
Chatham. Each year, many Chatham citizens enjoy sharing
a Christmas gift for a deserving child in this special way.
Monetary donations to the program are also accepted and
will be used to purchase gifts for children. All gifts must be
returned to UCB by Monday, Dec. 8. Questions may be

GIS FOOD DRIVE - Glenwood Intermediate
School held a food drive last week for
Contact Ministries of Springfield, and the
results were incredible. Over 9,000 items
were donated, and representatives from
Contact Ministries, including Executive
Director Bill Kienzle, were on hand to thank
the students and to pick up the items. The
fourth and fifth grade classes that donated
the most items will receive a free limo ride
and lunch at Godfather's Dec. 4.

Work continues on the second substation in
Chatham, located near the Route
4/Independence intersection on the north
edge of town. Construction is expected to be
completed by Dec. 21, and the site will be
commissioned and ready for use sometime
in January, according Village Director Del
McCord. Henkels and McCoy is the general
contractor on the $4.1 million project, with
some additional work near $250,000 also
being done to the village's other substation
on south Route 4.
School, community leaders continue work on
