
Glenwood Hall of Fame Banquet April 27
Tickets can now be purchased for the Glenwood Hall of Fame Banquet, to be held at noon on
Sunday, April 27, at Glenwood High School in Chatham. The cost of the tickets is $20 each, and
they can be obtained by calling the Glenwood High School Athletic Office at 483-2424, extension
5, or e-mailing kmidden@chathamschools.org.
The event will begin with a catered banquet, and concludes with a ceremony honoring the 2008
Hall of Fame Class of Inductees. This year's honorees include: Monty Carbonell, Dr. Grant
Rivera, Vernie and Opal Lee (posthumous), and the 1986-87 GHS Girls Basketball Team.
The Glenwood High School Hall of Fame, which includes students who have graduated from
Ball and Chatham High Schools, was created to honor those individuals or groups whose
actions or achievements in their chosen fields bring honor and distinction to the heritage of
Glenwood High School. Categories of recognition include: Achievement, Athletics, Service, and
Lifetime Recognition.
About the Honorees
•Monty Carbonell was a member of the 1975 Elite Eight varsity basketball team, was a tri-
captain for the 1975 varsity football team, and graduated with academic honors. He earned a
scholarship to Kansas University, then a member of the Big Eight Conference.
Playing inside linebacker, he started in his first football game in 1977 as a sophomore.
Carbonell was a three year letterman who averaged 80 tackles during his sophomore and junior
years, starting every game. He was voted as a tri-captain his senior year, but injured his arm. He
received the Kansas University Jayhawk Scholar Athlete award in 1980.
Carbonell graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering in 1981 and has
been employed by BP/ARCO for approximately 26-plus years as a project manager.
•Dr. Grant Rivera graduated from Glenwood High School in 1993. He went to Northwestern
University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in 1997. In 2003, he completed his doctoral
studies at the University of Alabama.
Dr. Rivera is the principal of South Cobb High School located in metro Atlanta, a school of
2,200 students and a staff of 200 people. As a consultant for Family Friendly Schools, a company
that works to improve parent involvement and family engagement, he conducts seminars
throughout the United States. Dr. Rivera teaches school law at the State University of West
Georgia as an adjunct professor.
Diane Sawyer and Good Morning America recognized him in March 2007 as a young, dynamic
administrator. Dr. Rivera was also noted as one of the “Top 20 Rising Stars Under 40” in an
Atlanta-area publication.
•Vernie and Opal Lee were a part of Chatham and the Ball-Chatham School District for much of
their lifetimes. Vernie was instrumental in establishing a youth summer baseball program and
also served as the umpire for many years. He served as the official scorekeeper for Glenwood
High School in the 1980s. Shortly after his death, the Vernie Lee Sportsmanship Award was
established at the high school.
Opal Lee was called the unofficial historian of Chatham by many. The new Chatham Area
Public Library addition will house the Opal Lee Chatham History and Genealogy Room n honor
of her many contributions to the library and community.
Vernie and Opal Lee were fixtures at Glenwood High School athletic events and supported the
district, students, and faculty.
•The 1986-87 Glenwood High School Girls Basketball-Conference team had a number of
accomplishments. Bryce Boston led the team to a Glenwood High School best-ever girls
basketball record of 23 wins and 2 losses.
The Lady Redskins were the Greater Midwestern Conference champions with an undefeated
record. They also were the Jacksonville Holiday Tournament champions. The girls ended their
season as the 1986-87 regional champions.
Members of Glenwood’s varsity team included: Beth Boston, Anne Conlon, Nancy Cox, Tricia
Criswell, Chris Dixon, Jodi Hails, Mary Hawkinson, Jennifer Hulvey, Heather Klemm, Cari
Lawrence, Tonya Migalich, and Shannon Staley. Bryce Boston and Ron Schwermin coached the
team. Alisha Carroll was the manager and Larry Lawrence the scorekeeper. Three individuals,
Beth Boston, Tricia Criswell, and Cari Lawrence, were named as all-conference players.
