As 28 years of experience on the Ball-Chatham Board of Education said goodbye Monday night, a
new era was ushered in as four new board members took their seats.
And leading the new era will be Mark Bartolozzi, who was elected by a 6-1 vote (Mike Falter no) of
his peers to be the new board president.  Bartolozzi and Falter were elected to the board in 2007.
Jim Neuses, recently appointed to take Matt Keppler's seat but with eight years of previous board
experience, was selected as vice president (7-0 vote).  Newly-elected member Lisa Weitzel was
elected board secretary (7-0 vote).
"I'm very excited and I'm optimistic about the future," Bartolozzi stated.  "I think we have the
opportunity to hit the ground running, and we have a lot to look forward to to keep us busy."
Leaving the board were Rick Carr (12 years experience), Joe Hartzler (8), Patrick Hansen (4) and
Kathy Lundin (4).  Taking their seats on the board were Alan Harling, Weitzel, John Kwedar and Linda
Carter.  Keppler, who moved out of state in late 2008, was also in attendance.
Supt. Bob Gillum recognized all outgoing members, who each gave closing remarks before a short
reception was held.
"This is the board that brought me here, and now there are two people left," Gillum stated.  "It's a
huge shift for me.  We are blessed with having a lot of professionals in our community, but I will miss
the history and consistency a three-term board member brings."
"It's been tremendously educational," Hartzler said.  "I thank you all for your support.  It's been a
good time."
"I want to thank folks for their patience," Hansen added.  "It has been a privilege to serve for you."
"It's been an honor to serve; 12 years is a long time," an emotional Carr said.  "There are so many
faces out there who have been so supportive over the years.  I don't know how to thank everybody...but
the person I need to thank the most is my wife (Dina)."
Carr cited the board's improved relationship with the BCEA as a major accomplishment while he
was on the board, and added that he worked with five different superintendents (Dan Schweers, Rick
Taylor, Bruce Hays, Rich Voltz, Bob Gillum) during his tenure.
•Following the reception, the new board members took their seats, and officer elections were held.
Neuses nominated Bartolozzi for president; Harling nominated Neuses for VP and Falter nominated
Weitzel for secretary.
