AJWC sets Christmas Decorating
Contest
The Auburn Junior Woman's Club is resurrecting the  Christmas Decorating Contest
as a means to help the club raise money to replace the decorations that adorn the
city square each year.  In addition, the club has announced that the Christmas Tree
Lighting Ceremony will be held Sunday, November 30 on the square at 5 p.m. It was
not held last year. The club will charge $5 per entry. All the money will go for prizes in
the three categories, Religious, Clark Griswold (excess use of outdoor lighting and
decorations) and Charlie Browniest (best decorations of a dog house, tool shed,
barn, outhouse, anything by your home) and replace the decorations. An entry form
can be found elsewhere in the Citizen. The deadline for entering is December 12 at 3
p.m. Judging will take place the evening of Thursday, December 18 as soon as it
gets dark. If you would like to make a donation, send it to the AJWC, P.O. Box 181,
Auburn.

Local winners in the International Peace
Poster Contest were, left to right: Kelsea
Cline (first place), Brock Jones (second),
Marrisa Robinson (third) and Benjamin
Pearce (Best in Show). The contest is
sponsored by the Lions Club and
encourages children ages 11-13 to creatively
express what peace means to them. The
2008-09 theme was "Peace Begins With Me."
The children were asked to create a poster
using any media they wished, to create a
visually interesting composition that captured
what their theme meant to them. There was
to be no lettering or numbering of any
language on the poster, only images. There
were 50 entries from Auburn Junior High at
Divernon from among the thousands from
around the world. Each local winner will be
judged again in New York City.
Luke Boesdorfer, left, son of Ben and Tammy

Children's Christmas Art Workshop
Dec. 14
The Auburn High School art classes are busy preparing for this year's Children's
Christmas Workshop. This has become a popular event. The workshop was very
successful last year and there have been many requests to repeat it again this
season. The workshop will take place Sunday, December 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the
Auburn High School art room. This year's Christmas Elves invite all area children
ages pre-K through sixth grade. The tuition is $25 per student, which will offset the
cost of art supplies, snacks, and juice. Any profits will  benefit the high school art
department.
Workshop students will be supervised the entire time by their own Christmas "elf,"
thus allowing families an opportunity to go Christmas shopping, wrap, or decorate
without the "help" from their children. Students will create several holiday art projects.
Snacks and juice will be provided, and a holiday movie will be shown while they are
creating their crafts. Space is very limited. Early reservations are encouraged and
appreciated. Please send the child's name, address, phone number, and tuition
(checks to AHS) to Amy Howard at Auburn High School, 511 North Seventh Street,
Auburn, IL 62615. For more information call 438-6549 during the day, or 438-4177
evenings.

YBL teams to be announced
The Auburn Youth Basketball League will start Saturday, January 3. However,
because of the small numbers and the possibility that more will sign up late, teams
will not be announced until next week. Parents should check with the Citizen office for
your kids team and first game. Deadline to register is December 26. Teams will be
posted at the schools, but can't be until school resumes January 5. Thus, the
postings will be made at the city utility office in Auburn, the Auburn Library, Harmons,
the post office in Divernon in addition to the Citizen office. Because a decision must
be made soon, some late signees may not be able to play. The league likes to keep
teams with no more than eight players at a maximum, seven preferably, if at all
possible. Parents, if you haven't signed up your child yet, call the Citizen office
438-6155 immediately or Joe Michelich at 438-3130.

Blood Drive at Auburn UMC Saturday, Jan. 24
Saturday, January 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Auburn United Methodist Church will support the Central Illinois Community Blood
Center with a blood drive at the church, located at 14100 State Route 4 between the Dairy Queen and football field. It is very important
to maintain a safe and adequate blood supply since 200 plus blood donations are needed daily for people in our area. The blood
center is the sole supplier to both Springfield hospitals as well as 17 other hospitals in the area. Donation uses include victims of
accidents, cancer and heart disease. All volunteers need to bring a picture ID, be at least 16 years of age, in good health and weigh at
least 110 pounds. Anyone under 17 needs to bring a signed parent permission form to donate. Forms are available at the high school
or day of donation at the Methodist Church. Please eat regularly the day you donate. There is a 6-week waiting period after pregnancy.
Donations are accepted following major surgery after release from physicians care and return to normal activities if no blood
transfusions were received. A free lunch will be served to donors. In addition to helping save lives, we are trying to help Auburn High
School win the Springfield Clinic Blood Challenge. The winning school is awarded a scholarship for a member of the senior class.
Call Jean Todd, AUMC parish nurse, at 438-9213 to schedule an appointment or for further information. Registration may also be done
online at www.CICBC.org. Walk-ins are always welcome. Donate blood to save a life and help our local youth.
Seek donations for 'Game for Cancer' Jan. 26
Auburn girls coach Dave Farris has announced a "Game for Cancer" January 26 with Kincaid as the opponent.
"We will seek sponsors of no more than $100 per business or person although any amount will do," says Farris. All funds will go to
cancer research.
Farris said his two assistant's came up with the idea and he is hopeful that the crowd will wear pink. In fact, Farris says that pink shirts
will also be on sale. Those wishing to donate or buy shirts may contact Farris (438-3017) or Carrie Mathews at the grade school
(438-6916) mornings and middle school (438-6919) afternoons. Farris says that cancer has probably affected a person in everyone's
extended family or a close friend. Cancer does not take time off even in these tough economic times.
"We have already received one donation and a commitment for another and the Farris family will pledge $100," he notes. He
concluded saying, "it would be a great sight to see our gym, both men and women and children, dressed in pink. Basketball is a
game, this is for life."

Helping Hands fund exceeds $7,500 goal
Once again Auburn Community Helping Hands has  exceeded its  goal with $7,944 in donations received. Recent donations were
received from: Joe and Joan Heyen, Bill and Pam Bird, Cornerstone Community Church and one anonymous donor. Since 1986,
Auburn Community Helping Hands has been helping Auburn families in need by providing winter coats and shoes for children. ACHH
would not be able to do any of these projects without the community’s continued support. Donations are accepted at either bank in
town or they can be mailed to ACHH, P.O. Box 74, Auburn year round. ACHH would like to thank its special angel who continues to
donate all year long.
Fund established at UCB for Cameron Huffines
A fund has been established at United Community Bank in Auburn for seven-year-old Cameron Huffines of Auburn. Cameron, the son
of Melissa Jones and a second grader at Auburn Elementary, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in November last year. He
underwent surgery to have the tumor removed and is currently hospitalized in St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, where he began radiation
treatment this week. His mother Melissa has been driving back every day from work in Springfield to Peoria to be with Cameron. The
family is in need of financial assistance of any kind. Monetary donations, gas cards and gift cards would be greatly appreciated.
Questions can be directed to Branden Crowl (438-9479), Tina Burton (438-3549) or Kim Burton (217-415-4033).
