AJWC Box Tops for Education program started
The Auburn Junior Women's Club is once again coordinating the collection of Box Tops for Education at the elementary and middle
schools. Classes will be rewarded throughout the year for bringing in the most box tops. The community is encouraged to submit box
tops for the schools as each box top is worth 10 cents. The schools are then able to purchase items needed for the students and
teachers. Some items that have been purchased in the past include digital cameras and library books for each grade level. Box tops
can be dropped off at either the schools or the library. If anyone is interested in helping out with this project, please contact a member
of the Auburn Junior Women's Club.

Bates selected Region 6
Athletic Director of Year
Dave Bates, Auburn High School head football coach and Athletic
Director, has been selected as the Class 1A and 2A Division 6
Athletic Director of the Year by the Illinois Athletic Directors
Association at an awards ceremony last Saturday at Tinley Park.
The following is the nomination resume:
Being a high school athletic director might be daunting to some,
but to Dave Bates it's just one position in addition to many others.
For the past 18 years, he has been the athletic director of the
Auburn Community School District #10 for both the high school
and junior high.
Dave earned his BA in physical education from Monmouth
College and followed it with his Master's from Illinois State
University in Sports Administration. He used this education to
start the Auburn Junior Football Program in 1996 and now is the
president in charge of purchasing, registration and educating
coaches under JFL standards.
Dave's contributions to the school district haven't only been
through athletics. He has also been a biology teacher for five
years and a P.E. teacher for 22. He was also a teacher and
assistant coach of three sports at Cairo High School for two years
preceding his time at Auburn.
If these positions aren't enough to keep him busy, he has also
served his conference in different ways. For the Prairie State
Conference, he worked as the president and secretary while
creating the master schedules for football and track. Recently, in
the Sangamon Conference, he developed the master schedule
for football. He has earned recognition for his efforts with
becoming a trustee and named president of the Illinois High
School Football Coaches Association in 2003. In a busy and
eventful life, he still manages to be an admirable leader for
students in the Auburn School District.
Hunt, 4x400 relay qualify for state meet
Auburn's Taylor Hunt will compete in two events at the IHSA Girls Class A State Track
and Field Meet this weekend in Charleston. The sophomore won the 400 and placed
second in the 200 at Friday's Sectional Meet at Rochester. The 1600 relay team of
Bryanna Stevens, Courtney Palazzolo, Marissa Schmid and Hunt also qualified for State
with a second place finish. As a team, the Lady Trojans scored 48 points to place fifth in
the 16-team Sectional. Hunt ran a season-best 59.9 to win the 400 over a very good
field that saw four runners qualify for State. It was her first time under one minute this
year after doing it to win the state title as an 8th grader, and last year in setting the
school record (59.6). Less than an hour later, Hunt came back to place second in the
200. Despite running in the eighth lane, Hunt matched her own school record with a
26.4 timing, her best of the season. The 1600 relay team turned in its best time of the
season with 4:19.2 and continues to close in on the school record of 4:15.0, which was
set in 1982 by the foursome of Melody Ping, Ruth Pierce, Renee Sutton and Monica
Pitman. The chances are promising that the record will fall if not against the stronger
competition at State, then next year since none of the foursome are seniors. Freshman
Taylor Magdich placed fourth in both the 1600 (5:50.3) and 3200 (12:25.8), the latter a
PR. Brittany Ippensen was fourth in the pole vault (8-0), Hillary Sims cleared 4-8 in the
high jump for fourth and the 800 relay team of Tera Kirby, Chelsea Domescik, Sims and
Bethani Hogan was fourth with a season-best 1:57.8. The 400 relay team of Kirby,
Musson, Domescik and Stevens placed fifth in 55.6 and Brooke Longmeyer took sixth in
the shot put with a 30-8 effort. Laurel Marques did not place in the 3200 but ran a
season-best 13:57.7.
MAGDICH WINS 3200 AT
CAPITAL AREA CLASSIC
Magdich won Auburn's only first place at the Capital Area Classic Monday at Glenwood.
The freshman won the 3200 in 12:29.5 and came back later for third in the 1600 in
5:50.7. Hunt, who did not run the 200, was second in the 400 with a time of 1:00.3. The
1600 relay team of Stevens, Palazzolo, Schmid and Hunt placed third in 4:22.6 and the
800 relay team of Kirby, Domescik, Sims and Hogan was eighth in 1:58.8.

Township Board votes on salaries for next
term
At the regular Auburn Township meeting held Wednesday, October 8, the board addressed setting
salaries for the next term, 2009-2013. Illinois statute requires that salaries for the new upcoming term
must be set at least 180 days before the term begins (by November 19) for all township officers.
Supervisor Jill Horn proposed that, in light of the current financial crisis being faced, not only by
citizens of Illinois, but by all Americans, the board should consider a freeze on salaries for all
township officers for the next term. Horn explained that it is hard to justify a raise, when those salaries
are being paid by the hardworking taxpayers of Auburn Township who are already financially
burdened. After some discussion Matt Brown, Auburn Township Assessor, explained that the salary
of the Auburn assessor is low compared with similar townships, and new home development in
Auburn Township is increasing daily, creating additional burden on the assessor. The board voted
unanimously to freeze the salaries of all township officers at the current rate, with the exception of the
assessor, which will receive a three percent year increase for the next four-year term. In addition to
the increase the assessor receives reimbursement for expenses incurred in the performance of
duties. The next term for the assessor will be from January 1, 2010 through January 1, 2014. The next
term for all other officers runs from May 18, 2009 through May 19, 2013.
