Water rates going up

A plaque commemorating the largest coal
mine in Illinois at the time, Panther Creek No.
1 which was operational from 1918-1932,
was unveiled at last Saturday's "Irwin's Park
Reunion" in the former town of Irwin, a couple
of miles north of Auburn. Taking part were,

City off to good FY '09
financial start
After posting a Fiscal Year '08 deficit of
$106,250, the city, after one month of Fiscal
Year 2009, has lopped off the majority of that
loss. The city starts each fiscal year at zero
and for the first month all four major funds
showed balances in the black totaling
$71,412.07. By funds, the balances were:
general $29,708; gas, $31,030; water, $2,283
and sewer, $8,389.
IPA elects Graham
McCoy President
The IPA will hold its regular monthly
meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 2 at the
Auburn City Hall. On June 4, the Irwin's Park
Association met at the Auburn Public Library
for its annual meeting at which the Board
held elections to fill the expiring terms of its
officers and two directors.
Graham McCoy was elected to replace retiring
president Roger McCredie. Re-elected to office
were vice president Vic Devos and treasurer
Bill McKain. Geri Dziewicki remains as acting
secretary and Diane McCoy accepted the
position of director. Following an amendment
to the bylaws increasing the maximum
number of directors from seven to nine, Diane
Irwin Reynolds and Paula Irwin McIntyre were
also elected to the board.
In other business the board discussed details
for the upcoming June 21 annual reunion
activities and approved the purchase of three
lots to the south of the pavilion from the
Swaringen family.

District PTO meeting
There were seven people in attendance
at the June 10 meeting of the Auburn
School District Parent Teacher
Organization. The meeting was held in the

School district working on
several summer projects
Several major projects are being taken care of this
summer by the Auburn School District. The gym floor at
Auburn Junior High at Divernon, additional lockers at the
high school and the removal of the tire chips at the
elementary school playground head the list. (more)
Veterans Research
Committee seeks veterans'
photos, stories
The Auburn Veterans Research Committee is seeking
photos and stories of Auburn veterans (living or deceased) for
the future Veterans Research Center to be located in the
Auburn Public Library. Pictures and stories may be e-mailed
to auburnveterans @yahoo.com or mailed to Auburn Veterans
Center, P.O. Box 141, Auburn, IL 62615. Anyone needing
their picture returned should supply a self-addressed
stamped envelope. A fundraising campaign for the research
center will begin as soon as the not-for-profit paperwork is
complete.

contingent upon payment by
the insurance company. Tom
Sandness of Auburn, who
was awarded the work on a
5-1 vote Monday, said that
upon approval, he would
need 2-3 weeks to do the job.
The building has been shut
since mid-May.

No Way!!! - Mayor refutes
population loss
"No way." Those were the words from Mayor Joe Powell in
response to a front page story in Wednesday's
Journal-Register stating that Auburn had lost population
since 2000. (more)
Township holding fresh herb and produce drive
Auburn Township will be accepting donations of fresh herbs and produce at the Township
Hall, 14837 S. Kennedy Road, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
These fresh items will be delivered to St. John's Breadline to help defray the cost of their
meals. Volunteers at the bread-line dry the herbs and grind them to add to the various
recipes they serve daily.
Fresh produce is always welcome with no limitations on type or quantity. If you are unable
to make it to the township hall during regular hours, items may be delivered any time (call in
advance) to Jill Horn (438-6872, 4670 Timberview Drive in Auburn, or to Elsie Semanik
(965-5355), in Thayer. Arrangements can also be made to have items picked up.

School board approves fees
for upcoming school year
The Auburn school board approved the district's student
fee schedule for the 2008-09 year at its June 21 meeting.
With the exception of meal prices, the fees are unchanged
from last year at the junior high, elementary and middle
schools.
At the high school, a new $30 graduation fee has been
added and the band fee was increased from $10 to $20.
Lunch prices for students at all levels was increased from
$1.70 to $2 per day and the breakfast fee increased from
$1.30 to $1.50. The adult meal fees also were increased for
lunch ($2.25 to $2.50) and breakfast ($1.60 to $1.80). A
complete fee list is printed in this week's edition of the
Citizen.

School board approves junior high handbook
changes
In its regular meeting Monday, July 21, the school board approved handbook changes, sold
the Barnes property, completed the teaching staff and tabled bids for new tile flooring at the
junior high at Divernon. (more)
Library Board to host open house reception
The Auburn Public Library Board will host an open house reception on Sunday, August 10 from
1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the library. The reception will honor two women: Betty Ludek, who recently
retired as library director after nearly 27 years, and Laura Carter who comes back to the library
as director, after previously serving as the assistant librarian for nine years.
The open house reception will be held in the library's meeting room and is open to the public.
The board encourages you to stop by to congratulate Betty on her retirement and to thank her
for her many years of service and to welcome Laura to her new position as library director. Cake
and punch will be served.
Sign up for city's emergency phone service
Any resident wishing to be placed on the city's emergency calling system can do so simply by
calling the city utility office at 217-438-6151 and registering. Recently, the city suffered a
two-plus hour electric outage. Those on the system were immediately notified of the outage.
The emergency system will notify residents of any sort of problem such as a tornado watch, a
water boil order a heavy snow that will require restricted parking on city streets, etc. About 200
people have signed on for the program that is free to all residents. More than one phone
number can be registered per family if desired.
City to crack down on burning violations
About 100 residents will receive letters next week from the city noting non-compliance with
an ordinance dealing with outdoor burning and unsightly accumulations of yard waste, debris,

First PTO meeting Wednesday, Aug. 27
All parents, faculty and citizens of the Auburn School district are invited to attend the first
Parent Teacher Organization meeting of the new school year. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m.
in the high school cafeteria Wednesday, August 27. Topics of discussion will include planning a
Fall Festival, fundraising and community event planning for the year. If you would like to be a
