Tri-M Chapter at AHS collecting soda can tabs
The Auburn Tri-M Chapter will be collecting tabs from soda cans to help a local composer's child. Tri-M is a music honor society that
focuses on service to the community and school music program. Last school year, composer Jason Waddell wrote a piece, "In
Celebration," especially for the Auburn High School band. This year, Jason's son is very ill, and the family is living in a Ronald
McDonald House while the son undergoes treatment. Tri-M would appreciated the community's help in collecting pop-tabs for the
Waddell family. Tabs may be dropped off in the high school office or sent to school with a student. Please label your tabs as going to
Mrs. Philbrick or Mrs. Ladage so that they are directed to the correct place. The collection will continue for the rest of the school year.
Contact Kim Ladage at 438-6817 or kiladage@auburn .k12.il.us if you have any questions.

Children's Christmas Art Workshop Dec. 6
The Auburn High School Art Club is busy preparing for this year's Children's Christmas Workshop.
This has become a popular event. The workshop was very successful last year and there have
been many requests to repeat it again this season. The workshop will take place in the Auburn
High School art room Sunday, December 6 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. This year's Christmas Elves invite
all area children ages three through sixth grade to visit the workshop to create many homemade
Christmas crafts. The tuition for the event is $25 per child and includes two and a half hours of
individual child care, art supplies, snacks and juice. Any profits will benefit the high school art
department. Workshop students will be supervised the entire time by their own "elf," thus allowing
families an opportunity to go Christmas shopping, wrap or decorate without the "help" from their
children. Students will create several holiday art projects. Snacks and juice will be provided, and
holiday movies will be shown while they are creating their crafts. Space is very limited. Early
reservations are encouraged and appreciated. Please send the child's name, phone number,
tuition (checks to AHS) to Amy Howard at Auburn High School, 511 N. 7th Street, Auburn, IL 62615.

Walker program to begin at Auburn
Elementary
Beginning November 30, the walker program will begin for Auburn residents who
wish to walk for exercise during the winter months. Anyone interested in walking in
the building must first sign a contract for participation and be issued a badge from
the elementary school office. Contracts and badges will be available at the office
starting Monday, November 16 from the hours of 1 to 3 p.m. every school day. All
walkers must sign in each time they use the elementary facility. A clipboard with
sign-in sheets will be located near the entrance that is open. Walkers must wear
their badges whenever they are in the building. Morning walkers may enter the
building at the gym entrance at 5:30 a.m. and may walk until 7:15 a.m. on Monday
through Friday when school is in session. In the evening, walkers may enter the
building at the office entrance at 6 p.m. and may walk until 8 p.m. on Monday through
Thursday when school is in session. On early dismissal days, the building will not
be open for evening walkers. When athletic events are scheduled for the gym, only
hallways on the east side of the gym may be used for walking. If there is no event in
the gym, it may also be used for walking or running. Walking or jogging-type of shoes
must be worn so that the gym floor is not damaged. Classroom areas are not open
for public use. The adult walker program will run from November 30 through March
31.
Youth Basketball League needs
volunteers
Registration for the Auburn Youth Basketball League will be held soon. Forms will
be available at the Auburn and Divernon Elementary schools and the Middle school
for boys and girls in grades 2-5. Forms also will be available at the Citizen office.
There is no charge to play. This year, there is a major need for help to run the
program. Needed will be officials, scorekeepers and coordinators, the latter, people
who learn how the program runs and can donate 2-3 hours on a Saturday or two.
Officials usually work two successive games and scorekeepers the same although
parents can make themselves available for their kid's game only. The program runs
nine weeks, January 9 to March 6. Coaches will be members of the boys and girls
high school teams. Anyone wishing to help should contact Joe Michelich at
438-6155 during the day and 438-3130 evenings.
Good news and some not so good
The school board meeting Monday was just an hour long but it got some good news and some not
so good. Supt. of Schools Kathy Garrett, in her monthly report, said that the district had, as of
October 16, received all its state money for the last school year. But as of November 12, the state
was behind $1,342,316 in payments. However, she added, that state aid which amounts to about
$500,000 a month and comes in two payments, is just $250,000, or one payment behind.
Thus, the district is short over $1 million in items like annexation money ($500,000), incentive
money, transportation, etc. When asked, Garrett said that there are no assurances that the district
will get all its money this school year. "It has happened before," she said, "the state basically
pro-rating whatever it owed." And, she added she wouldn't be surprised if the state foundation
level (money behind each child), was not lowered from its present $6,119 in the near future.
In other action, the board adopted the tentative levy for FY11 of $3,985,000. But, Garrett doesn't
expect to get this amount. "You always set your budget high to guarantee getting the maximum you
can, such as $2.07 for education." Three coaches were hired, Gary Wilmarth as wrestling coach,
Matt Grimm as assistant wrestling coach and Rayna Landers as sixth grade volleyball coach.
