Plan: Air-condition schools in 5 years
If all goes according to plan, all buildings in the Auburn School District will be air-conditioned in the next five years.
Presently, Auburn Elementary is undergoing a $2.2 million project that will air-condition the entire building with the exception of the gym.
Supt. of Schools Kathy Garrett told the Citizen Tuesday that the plan is to continue the air-conditioning of all buildings, hopefully by
2014. "It will depend on our bonding ability and we will look at it before any decisions are made. But we are hopeful that we can fulfill
this action in the near future," said Garrett. Divernon Elementary is next on the list.
Bonds to pay for the current project, which has a 20 year payback, will be financed by an additional tax, but a minor one. The cost to
taxpayers will be roughly $45 per year on a home or business assessed at $100,000. This amounts to 12-15 cents per $100. This
year's project will not increase taxes much per se because the district has an 11 cents decrease. To obtain the money the district
issues Health, Life Safety Code Bonds. The project, which will be finished before the start of school August 19, is on schedule. It was
started in early June with demolition work. Presently workmen have removed all ceiling tiles to make way for the duct work that is about
50 percent complete.
The AC units will be placed on the roofs sometime in July. Each unit, which can cool up to six rooms, will probably do four or five.
Air-conditioning isn't the sole summer project. At Divernon Elementary, modification has been made to the special education room and
a room for Special Ed. has been added at the high school. The high school library also got new carpeting. Also on the docket will be
some blacktop work, window replacement and changing of lighting fixtures.
Freshman orientation Monday, Aug. 10
There will be a freshman orientation called "Freshman First" Monday, August 10 from 9
a.m. until 3 p.m. at the high school. There is no charge for this informative event which
will cover such topics as: sports eligibility, semester exams, teachers/classes, bullying,
study skills, extra-curricular activities, general procedures and lunch procedures. There
will also be a tour of the high school building and facilities. Pizza will be provided for
lunch at no charge to the student.
"Make plans now for your child to attend 'Freshman First.' It will help prepare him or her
for a wonderful high school experience. Call the high school office today at 438-6817 to
sign up," says principal Darren Root.
