The Auburn Elementary School kindergarten
classes held their annual Citizenship
Concert Friday, February 27. The youngsters
honored Abraham Lincoln this year, reciting
highlights of Lincoln's life, in addition to
singing several patriotic songs.
Boys, girls cage banquets
slated
Separate banquets for the boys and girls basketball
teams have been scheduled in the next two weeks.
The girls banquet is set for Thursday, March 12 at
6:30 p.m. The boys banquet will be Tuesday, March 17
also at 6:30 p.m.  Both will be held at the Parish Hall
and the meal cost is $7.50 for each, payable at the
door. However, reservations should be made at the
high school. Call either 438-6549 or 438-6817.

Grimm will be one of three grand
marshals who will lead the annual
Parade of  Champions this Saturday that
precedes the 30th annual Illinois
Elementary School Association State
Final Wrestling Tournament at Northern
Illinois University in DeKalb. Grimm,
principal at Auburn for the past 1 1/2
years, has been involved in wrestling
since his high school days at Lanphier in
Springfield where he qualified for the
state finals in his senior year. He was
also a city and regional champ. A 1995
graduate of Illinois College, Grimm was a
two-time NCAA Division III qualifier, an
NCAA All-American and held the No. 1
ranking in his senior year before it ended
with an injury. He compiled a college
mark of 102-28. Before he became a
principal at Auburn, he produced 72 state
qualifiers and 17 who placed in the finals
in his 10 years as the Glenwood Middle
School wrestling coach. He had four state
champions, two others taking seconds.

School board candidates
forum Tuesday, March 24
The Auburn Education Association has scheduled a
school board candidates forum for Tuesday, March 24
at the high school cafeteria at 7 p.m. The seven
candidates will answer pre-approved questions and
also questions from the audience. The forum, which
will be followed with refreshments, will be moderated
by former school board president Bill Burke. The
seven candidates are Laurie King, who is the lone
candidate for the two year unexpired term, along with
John Cox, Fred Jessup, Vince Speranza, Sean Snyder,
Jeff Mortiner and Scott Norris. Jessup, Mortimer and
King are incumbents.
Board finds roomfor another room
With a critical need for at least one new classroom at the high school, the board of education
Monday, after hearing of nine possible options, decided on remodeling a former locker room  at the
high school. (

Are you smarter
than a fifth grader?
The Auburn District Student Assistance Program
team will present the game show, "Are You Smarter
Than a 5th Grader" to collect donations for a
scholarship that will benefit a high school senior this
year. The show will be Friday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. in
the elementary gym. Admission price is a donation of
at least $1 and door prizes will be given out to
audience members throughout the evening.
The game show will have contestants from the high
school, district faculty, administration, and our very
own fifth graders participating. The comunity is
encouraged to come and support their favorite
contestant and support the Auburn SAP Scholarship
Fund.
Auburn High School won the Illlini Lincoln
Envirothon competition held March 12 at
Lake Springfield to earn the right to advance
to the State Competition May 14-15 in
Monticello. Team members are, front (L-R):

Anderson; back: Ian Anderson (alternate),
Andrea Jones, Kayla DuBois and Sam
Greifzu (alternate). They are coached by Jami
Bowman. Teams were tested in five
categories, soils, wildlife, forestry, aquatics
and current events. Auburn finished first in
three categories, wildlife, aquatics and
forestry, on the way to the championship. The
Envirothon was hosted by the Illinois Soil and
Water Conservation Districts.
AHS to present 'Where's
Charley?' March 27-28
Auburn High School will present the musical comedy
"Where's Charley?" Friday and Saturday, March 27-28
in the Auburn Junior High at Divernon gymnasium.
The story takes place in the late 1800's and features
two college students, Charley and Jack, who are
excited about their upcoming dates with young and
attractive Kitty and Amy. Unfortunately, Charley's
Aunt Lucia, who is needed as a chaperone, fails to
arrive. In desperation, Charley disguises himself as
his aunt so the young ladies can still visit. Trouble
occurs when Amy's stuffy uncle, Mr. Spettigue, falls
for Charley (who is dressed as his aunt). Meanwhile,
the real Aunt Lucia has arrived. Chaos and comedy
ensue as Charley attempts to keep everyone believing
he is both his aunt and himself. Curtis Penfold has
the lead role of Charley. Other main roles are Logan
Butts as Jack, Ashley Christian as Kitty, Katie Fox as
Amy, Alyssa Kieffer as Donna Lucia, Patrick Moose as
Sir Francis and Matt Diemer as Mr. Spettigue. Also in
the cast are Nick Landers, Jonathon Jones, Ashley
Curtis, Colton Brummett, Elissa Dolbeare, Natalie
Ackerson, Ellie Pierson, Anne Moose, Jessica Dixon,
Katie Cartwright and Morgan Brown. Members of the
pit orchestra are Megan Chrisler, Kortney Lotz, Aaron
Lawler, Erika Bergmann, Chase Brackemyer, Logan
Kuhn, Caitlin Glandon, Bryan Diemer, Colby Mars,
Brandon Townsend, Austin Wilson, Hannah Rhoades,
Bridget Patterson and Barry Penfold. Nicole Milhauser
is the student director/house manager and Chris
Newenham is the stage manager. The backstage crew
includes Jordan Boster, Chelsea Domescik, Ane
Jacobs, Jessica Lewis, Kati Dyer, Joel Wilson, Kiana
Schoonover, Anthony Metzger and Jordan Downey.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. both nights and
performances will start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be
purchased at the door, $6 for adults and $3 for
students and seniors. A family ticket for families of
four or more can be purchased for $15. Favors to
support the cast, crew and pit members will be on
sale before the show and during intermission, and
concessions will be sold at intermission. Due to
copyright laws, no videotaping or photography will be
allowed.
AJWC offering scholarship
The Auburn Junior Women's Club annouces that it
will offer another scholarship this year. The
scholarship will be awarded to a female Auburn High
School graduate attending college for the next fall
semester. The amount will be determined based on
the number of applicants. Applications can be picked
up at the Auburn High School guidance counselor's
office. The deadline to submit an application is May
13, 2009. The winner will be announced at this year's
graduation. Any questions can be directed to Tammy
Boesdorfer at 438-4139.
Auburn High School will present "Where's

As a citizenship project, kindergarten
students in Auburn and Divernon raised
money by bowling for Cameron Huffines. The
students brought in change that matched
their bowling scores and collected a total of
$233. Students Sarah Yates, Kelli Spurlin,

Li'l Trojan wrestling
club to begin April 2
Auburn Elementary School will host the
Li'l Trojan Wrestling Club, starting
Thursday, April 2.The wrestling club is for
ages pre-K through 5th grade. The club
will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays
through May 7 from 7 to 8 p.m. The cost
is $20 per child, $10 for a second child
from the same family and a third child
from the same family is free. Information
on the club was sent home with

Unrelated incidents cause problems for school district
A lone woman who robbed the United Community Bank at Divernon last Friday morning is still at
large. She took an undisclosed amount of cash after brandishing a gun and said she had a bomb,
which later proved to be a PVC-style pipe with wires and a battery. (

Easter Egg hunt at AUMC April 11
Auburn United Methodist Church will hold an Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 11 at 10 a.m. The
event is for all toddlers through 5th grade children in the community. Come enjoy the hunt with
over 1,600 Easter Eggs. The church is located at 14100 State Route 4.
Economic Development Committee open house dates
The Auburn EDC (Economic Development Committee) will host an Auburn Open House April
17-19. The EDC is a citywide committee, organized to support local businesses in Auburn and to
promote city growth. The EDC will  host a com-munitywide garage sale, and to make the most of
the weekend would like to encourage events such as open houses in the homes for sale in
Auburn, business open houses and local groups hosting activities. "The Auburn Open House will
be advertised in the surrounding communities to bring in as many people in as possible," said
EDC chairman Bill Reynolds. The EDC invites all citizens interested in participating in the
community wide garage sale to contact the Auburn Citizen and reserve your ad space. "This event
would be a great time to promote your business to local and neighboring city traffic, and for local
groups and organizations to recruit new members or host fundraisers," added Reynolds. Also any
local businesses  that will be hosting an event are invited to call Bill Reynolds at (217) 306-1772
to be added to the handout that will be available along with city  maps that weekend.
