5th graders win 'Rube' title again
For the second year in a row, Mrs. Loretta Campbell's fifth grade class has won
regional competition in the Rube Goldberg contest. After copping the local title a
week earlier in competition with 15 other Sangamon County schools, the graders
advanced to the "regional", the last stop in the organized program at the University of
Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, defeating seven other local winners.
This year's project was entitled "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Campbell, who is
retiring from teaching after this school year, gave all the credit to the class members,
a bunch of "teachie kids" and advisors Ed Maduas and Steve Brown, engineers with
Hanson Professional Services in Springfield. "Ed preached sticking to the theme and
having a reliable project, one that would work every time," said Campbell. The class
members spent about an hour and a half a week for three months in creating their
winner. Mrs. Busby's fifth grade class also competed in Champaign. It was third in
the local competition. Only a first is given at the regional.

Grade level move forum April 19
The Auburn School Board has scheduled a public forum open to all citizens in the
district  to discuss a grade level reconfiguration proposal which would   have an
effect on students in every building except the high school. The plan calls for having
K-2 students in the district (including students who now attend Divernon Elementary)
attend Auburn Elementary. Students in grades 3-5 would attend Auburn Middle
School and students in grades 6-8 would attend Auburn Jr. High in Divernon. The
move would begin with the 2011-12 school year.  In a letter sent home to parents this
week, the district outlined educational and financial reasons for the moves.  The plan
would settle issues of small class sizes in Divernon and allow teachers of the same
grade to be in the same building. The middle school and junior high changes would
allow staff to be shared along grade levels, saving the district money and allowing
teachers to attend departmental team meetings. Total financial savings have been
estimated at $200,000 and would include no teacher layoffs. The SAFE before and
after school program would remain in Divernon and all elementary students would
ride a separate bus to Auburn.  The forum is scheduled for April 19, at 7 p.m. at the
Auburn Jr. High School in Divernon gym. The final decision will be made at the
regular board meeting on April 26 at 7 p.m. at the District Office.
