School board approves junior high handbook changes

Thursday, July 24, the board held a brief special meeting to approve a bid of $13,979.50 to Champ's Floor Covering of
Springfield for the tile work. It will replace the carpeting in all the main halls of the building.
The motion to accept the bid at the Monday meeting was tabled as the board sought  clarification of state law. Supt. of
Schools Kathy Garrett said that it was determined that the bid came under an exemption allowed for renovation when the bid
did not exceed $20,000.
At the special meeting, the board gave Garrett approval to proceed on two concrete projects after revised bids are received.
This includes two ramps at the junior high to make it handicap accessible and to build a sidewalk to the band room which is
in the old high school.
The handbook changes pertain to discipline at the middle school bring it in line with the procedures at the elementary
schools. They involve respect (yourself and others, learning and property) responsibility and safety.
These rules outline expectations for hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, office, playground and buses.
All students are expected to abide by the Trojan Trait Rules and Expectations.
Students will start each day on green. If a student chooses to break a rule or expectation he or she will be asked to change
their color accordingly. The colors will be green (excellent), yellow (warning), orange (detention, lunch or after school), and red
(principal consequences vary).
There also will be incentives throughout the school year that the students will be able to take part in if they are on green.
The infractions are listed in three levels, acts of misconduct (Level 1); acts of gross misconduct (Level) 2 and severe acts of
gross misconduct (Level 3).
Level 1 infractions include academic dishonesty, forgery, disruptive behavior, refusal to follow instruction, horseplay, etc.

tardiness, gum chewing, inappropriate attire, etc.
Level 3 infractions include dishonesty, offensive language, repeated violations, harassment, fighting or provoking a fight,
smoking or possession of tobacco, etc.
Garrett reported that the Barnes property house had been sold to William and Connie Gwinn for $90,000 and that the food
and milk bids were only good for the first half of the school year. "I suspect that we will have to raise prices for the second
semester," noted Garrett.
Garrett also reported that the teaching staff is complete after the board approved the hiring of Stacy Zuber as a high school
science teacher.
Ben Ladage was also employed as the eighth grade girls basketball coach and Paige Davis was approved as high school
girls basketball volunteer coach.
Two resignations were accepted,  Doug Anderson as JV baseball coach and teacher Gina Farris who will retire after the
2011-2012 school year.
