Friends of Auburn Parks hold golf fundraiser
The Friends of the Auburn Parks hosted their fourth annual golf outing at Edgewood Golf Club May 9.
The money raised this year is intended for the purchase of playground equipment for the park in Western Acres more
commonly known as Emergency Squad Park. The organization also plans to assist with some smaller projects at the other city
parks.
Their future plans include efforts to obtain money on the scale needed to commence construction of the infrastructure for
Redbud Park. They will be seeking both private donations and corporate and public grant money to be used in conjunction with
the money received by the City of Auburn from the parks levy.
Friends of the Auburn Parks was formed December 30, 2004 and is a not-for-profit organization formed by community
volunteers for the sole purpose of preserving, beautifying, improving and maintaining the public recreational facilities and
parklands located in the City of Auburn. Zach Dinardo is president of the organization.
In 2005 the "Friends" conducted a survey to determine the needs and wants for the city parks. They determined that the initial
focus of their efforts should be placed on adding to the existing parks while larger funding sources were found for the
development of Redbud Park. They helped to educate the voters in the city about the advantages of passing a referendum to levy
a small tax (approximately $2 per month for most households) which could only be used for parks. The voters overwhelmingly
supported this referendum, passing it by a two-thirds majority.
The money raised from the annual golf outings has allowed them to purchase bike racks and picnic tables for the park in
Western Acres, Union (East) Park, and Pohlod Park; including a new playground for 2-5 year olds at Union Park and a handicap
accessible playground for Pohlod Park.
The purchases would not have been possible without matching funds from the City of Auburn and grants received from the
Auburn Business Association, Ronald McDonald House charities, and Sam's Club. Donations to Friends of the Auburn Parks are
tax deductible.
